I buy Kindle books on sale all the time, but I usually highlight those in my Sunday Posts. So I’m going to focus on all the lovely books I received as Christmas gifts this year!
Physical books
An Encyclopedia of Fairies: Hobgoblins, Brownies, Bogies, & Other Supernatural Creatures, by Katherine Briggs. A gift from Mr. Bookwyrm, and a complete surprise. This is pretty much the definitive book on British fairy traditions, and it’s been out of print for years. Used copies are really expensive, so I had pretty much given up on ever getting a copy. But my wonderful husband managed to track down a copy, and I am so excited! I will use it for research when reading, and hopefully also for writing. (My copy doesn’t have the dust jacket, which doesn’t matter to me in the slightest. The cloth cover is black with a lovely gilt fairy stamped on the front and gilt lettering on the spine. And honestly, with this book, the cover doesn’t matter a bit; it’s the contents I need.)
The Nutcracker, by Alexandre Dumas (Barnes & Noble collectible edition.) A gift from my COYER Secret Santa (thank you, Michelle!) The cover photo doesn’t do it justice; it’s a leather softcover, and all the yellow/gold bits are gilt, so it’s just gorgeous. I never knew that Dumas had written a version of the story! After all my years of being a Nutcracker ballet mom, it will be fun to compare the story with the ballet.
Unravel the Dusk, by Elizabeth Lim. Another gift from my COYER Secret Santa; this one was on my wish list. Can’t wait to read it!
Hobbit Virtues: Rediscovering Virtue Ethics Through J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, by Christopher A. Snyder. A gift from my mom and stepdad, who put up with years of my Tolkien obsession when I was young, and who know me very well. This is philosophy and ethics through a Tolkien lens, all in shortish essays so I can dip into it throughout the year.
Total Cat Mojo: The Ultimate Guide to Life With Your Cat, by Jackson Galaxy. A gift from my sister, for whenever we get a cat again. (Hopefully soon!)
Star Trek Costumes: Five Decades of Fashion from the Final Frontier, by Paula M. Block and Terry J. Erdmann. Another well-chosen gift from my parents, this one combines my love of Star Trek in most of its incarnations and my life-long interest in costume design and history. It’s an enormous coffee-table book with tons of photographs, and it’s going to be so much fun to peruse!
His Majesty’s Dragon, Throne of Jade, and Black Powder War, by Naomi Novik. A gift from Mr. Bookwyrm. I specifically requested this edition because A) they are trade paperbacks, so the font would hopefully be bigger than my mass-market editions, and B) the artwork is fantastic, and there’s artwork that runs across the spines of the entire series, which will look really cool on the shelf once the series is complete. (bottom photo; only books 1-3 are available so far.) (B) is still true, but alas, (A) turned out to be a mirage; the font is quite small. But they’re beautiful, so I don’t care.
Digital books
Hole in One and Inheritance Tracks, by Catherine Aird. Books 20 and 25 in the Inspector Sloan mystery series, these were gifts from Mr. Bookwyrm. I’ve been reading the series for years, but I just never seemed to find copies of these.
A Stitch in Time and A Twist of Fate, by Kelley Armstrong. Gifts from my sister, who has a pretty good idea of what I enjoy reading, so I’m looking forward to giving these time-travel romances a try!

Oooh, you have some great new additions for your hoard here! I haven’t read those two Kelley Armstrong books yet, but I’m hoping I like them both. I got the hardback copies from Subterranean Press, but they came with free ebook versions too, so now I have to pick which edition I want to read. 🙂
