NaNoWriMo 2022

October 20, 2022 writing 5

I’m doing it.

I’m scared to announce it, and I’m scared I’ll fail, but I’m doing it anyway.

I will be participating in NaNoWriMo this November.

I am announcing it here because I need both encouragement and accountability. To succeed, I will have to battle the dragons of procrastination, perfectionism, and self-doubt, as well as the dreaded time-devouring monster known as the internet.

I have had a novel idea kicking around in my head for about 8 years. In November 2014, I tried to write it during NaNoWriMo, and failed spectacularly—I wrote about 860 words of the 50,000-word goal.

This year, I vow to do better.

I don’t have a lot of time left to prepare, but I have started prepping. I have tools to help with plotting and character building. I’m refining my main characters. I have bits and bobs of backstory that I have written over the years, a slightly better sense of where the book is going than I did in 2014, and a few more ideas on what happens along the way. I’m in a better place to write it than I was then.

And I know this idea is going to keep knocking at the door until I give in and write it down.

With perseverance and support, I believe I can do this. (To be honest, I don’t quite believe it yet, but I am going to keep telling myself I do until it’s true.)

It means you may not see me around much in November.

I’ll be prioritizing writing over blogging and even over reading. I have to, if I’m going to make my daily goal (1666 words per day – close to 4 pages, single spaced.) But I’ll try to pop in here at least once a week (hello, Sunday Post!) to check in and let you know how I’m doing. And I hope to get at least a few reviews written as well.
