2022 Challenge Wrap-Up

Goodreads Reading Challenge 2022

I set my Goodreads Reading Challenge goal at 175 books for 2021. I had not quite made my 180-book goal in 2021, and some of the books I wanted to read in 2022 were longer and/or harder, so I thought 175 would be quite challenging enough.

HOW I DID: I blew through my goal, reading 197 books. However, a fair number of those were rereads, including some books that I read twice in 2022!

For the following challenges, note that the widgets only count books I reviewed, not books I read.

The Backlist Reader Challenge 2022

  1. The Man in the Brown Suit by Agatha Christie
  2. 84, Charing Cross Road by Helene Hanff

I host The Backlist Reader Challenge 2022, so of course I participated in 2022. My goal was to read 24 books published in 2020 or earlier that had been on my TBR list (on Goodreads) for a while, with an emphasis on books I had been given as well as older ARCs. My secondary goal was to actually post reviews for most of them.

HOW I DID: FAIL. I read 22 qualifying books, so I was close on quantity, but I only reviewed two of them.

Audiobook Challenge 2022

  1. 84, Charing Cross Road by Helene Hanff

I participated in the Audiobook Challenge 2022, hosted by Caffeinated Reviewer and That’s What I’m Talking About. I aimed for the Stenographer level of 10-15 audiobooks.

HOW I DID: I listened to 20 books – Yay! Technically, I made my goal, but I goofed on review-writing and linking to the challenge.

Library Love Challenge 2022

Library Love Challenge 2022

Host: Angel’s Guilty Pleasures & Books of My Heart
1 January, 2022 — 5 January, 2023
Completed!

None yet!

I participaed in the Library Love Challenge 2022, hosted by Angel’s Guilty Pleasures Books of My Heart. I aimed for the Dewey Decimal level: 12 books over the course of the year.

HOW I DID: Technically, I met my goal, reading exactly 12 library books during 2022. But I failed to review or link my reviews to the challenge.

  1. The Man in the Brown Suit by Agatha Christie

I signed up for Read Christie 2022, hosted by the authorized Agatha Christie website. They picked a theme and a specific book each month. (You can either read the official book, or choose another that fits the theme.) My goal was 12 books: one per month.

Below are the books I read but had not yet reviewed for Read Christie 2022 as of the end of the year. Books marked * are books I have read or listened to before — which is most of them, because I have read almost all of Christie’s works at some point in my life.

  • Why Didn’t They Ask Evans? *
  • Death on the Nile *
  • After the Funeral *
  • The Secret Adversary * – audiobook
  • Murder on the Links *
  • Murder in Mesopotamia *
  • A Caribbean Mystery *
  • Destination Unknown *
  • Marple: Twelve New Stories
  • They Came to Baghdad *

HOW I DID: Close, but not quite. I kept up pretty well until November, when NaNoWriMo took over my time and my brain. I didn’t read the November and December books. And I failed to review them, though that wasn’t technically one of my goals.

22 in 2022 was an informal challenge (as far as I know.) I came across it as an Instagram tag, #22in2022, and decided that it was a good way to keep track of the books I own and really wanted or needed to read in 2022. Obviously, there was some overlap with The Backlist Reader Challenge.

Over half the titles I picked were gifts. The rest were either titles I bought or titles that Robin had strongly recommended to me.

The photo only shows the 17 physical books. The remaining five titles were either Kindle and/or audio format. Here’s the list of titles, alphabetically by author (and in series order.) Titles in boldface are the books I read.

  1. Hole in One (C. Aird)
  2. Inheritance Tracks (C. Aird)
  3. A Stitch in Time (K. Armstrong)
  4. A Twist of Fate (K. Armstrong)t
  5. Silverwolf (J. Bedford)
  6. Murphy’s Law (R. Bowen) – started, not completed in 2022
  7. Death of Riley (R. Bowen)
  8. Death of an Avid Reader (F. Brody)
  9. A Death in the Dales (F. Brody)
  10. The Raven Heir (S. Burgis)
  11. The Nutcracker (A. Dumas)
  12. Index, A History of the (D. Duncan)
  13. Spin the Dawn (E. Lim)
  14. Unravel the Dusk (E. Lim)
  15. The Boy, the Mole, the Fox, and the Horse (C. MacKesy)
  16. A Mass for the Dead (S. McDuffie)
  17. Every Heart a Doorway (S. McGuire) – audiobook
  18. The Starless Sea (E. Morgenstern)
  19. The Tea Dragon Festival (K. O’Neill)
  20. The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue (V. E. Schwab)
  21. A Darker Shade of Magic (V. E. Schwab)
  22. Hobbit Virtues (C. Snyder)

HOW I DID: I failed this challenge spectacularly. I read only 6.5 of 22 books. (Hopefully, I picked better choices for #23in2023.)

  1. The Man in the Brown Suit by Agatha Christie
  2. An Impossible Imposter by Deanna Raybourn
  3. When She Dreams by Amanda Quick

COYER Seasons 2022: Winter. My goal was to read and review 6 qualifying books. (Qualifying books are ebooks you own that cost under $2.99, and audiobooks you own that cost under $5.)

HOW I DID: I read 22 qualifying books. Unfortunately, I really failed on the review-writing front.

COYER Seasons 2022: Spring

COYER Seasons 2022: Spring

Host: Michelle and Berls @ Because Reading Is Better; Stephanie @ Once Upon a Chapter; and Lillian @ Mom With a Reading Problem
Progress: 3/10 (30%)
1 April, 2022 — 31 December, 2022
Failed

30
  1. A Perilous Perspective by Anna Lee Huber
  2. When She Dreams by Amanda Quick
  3. The Littlest Library by Poppy Alexander

COYER Seasons 2022: Spring. My goal was to read and review 10 qualifying books. (Qualifying books could be in any format. If owned, ebooks must cost under $2.99, and audiobooks and physical books must cost under $5. Library books and borrowed books also count, but no books or audiobooks from subscription services.)

HOW I DID: As far as reading goes, I blew that goal out of the water: I read 36 books that qualified for the challenge! But the reviewing slump continued.

COYER Seasons 2022: Summer

COYER Seasons 2022: Summer

Host: Michelle and Berls @ Because Reading Is Better; Stephanie @ Once Upon a Chapter; and Lillian @ Mom With a Reading Problem
Progress: 6/30 (20%)
1 July, 2022 — 31 December, 2022
Failed

20
  1. A Duchess By Midnight by Charis Michaels
  2. Arcadia by Tom Stoppard
  3. The Secret of Bow Lane by Jennifer Ashley
  4. 84, Charing Cross Road by Helene Hanff
  5. Make, Sew and Mend, by Bernadette Banner
  6. Station Eternity by Mur Lafferty

COYER Seasons 2022: Summer. My goal was to read and review 30 qualifying books. (Qualifying books for the Summer challenge could be in any format, any price, and any format.)

HOW I DID: I read 66 qualifying books! (Two of them twice within the 3-month challenge period, but I didn’t count the second time through.) I wrote a few more reviews, but my review completion rate was still low.

Additional Goals

I wanted to read and review at least some of my backlog of review copies: FAIL.

I want to be better about reviewing generally: FAIL. My reviewing slump continued almost unabated.

I want to read more diversely: A QUALIFIED SUCCESS. The percentage of my books in 2022 by POC and/or LGBTQIA+ authors, and/or featuring a diverse cast of characters, is up somewhat compared to previous years.

SUMMARY: Overall, I did a lot better with the “reading” side of my goals than I did on the “reviewing” side. On the plus side, I read some amazing books, both new releases and older books that were new to me. I discovered several new-to-me authors to love. So although I didn’t review the majority of the books I read in 2022, I still feel it was a very good reading year.

How did you do with your reading challenges this year?

It sounds to me like you did a great job with your actual reading goals, so I’d call that a win! I hear you on the reviews, though. I’ve been wanting to write more full reviews of books than I had, but most of the books I read only get a couple of sentences in my monthly wrap-up posts.

Great job with your reading and your goals! I had to finally admit to myself that I just wasn’t going to link up reviews and stepped away from official challenges. I don’t know why I have a mental block about doing it but I just don’t. This year I’m trying to focus on reading books I was really excited about reading and so far I’m having fun. Good luck with your 2023 reading!
