Treasures from the Hoard: Fortune’s Fool by Mercedes Lackey
The third book in Mercedes Lackey’s Tales of the Five Hundred Kingdoms series, Fortune’s Fool is an enjoyable if eclectic remix of a number of fairy tales. Lackey takes a wide assortment of elements drawn from Russian, eastern and northern European, Japanese, and Middle Eastern folk and fairy tales, and mixes them up, higgledy-piggledy… and it works surprisingly well.

Helping after Hurricane Helene
My heart goes out to all the victims of Hurricane Helene in every state… and particularly to the family and community of Camp Celo, one of the summer camps I attended as a child. Located in western North Carolina, the camp was devastated by the floods.
Books I Read Because of the Hype
I never read a book just because of the hype. There has to be something about the book that appeals to me, and it has to be in a genre I enjoy. But what hype can do is bring a book to my attention that I might not have noticed or picked up otherwise.
