The Sunday Post is hosted by the wonderful Kimberly, the Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news, recap the past week, take a look ahead, and showcase our new treasures—I mean books!
Last Week
In real life: Still working hard, but making progress.
My heart goes out to all the Canadians dealing with the wildfires in Alberta, Quebec, Nova Scotia, and elsewhere…especially the ones who have had to evacuate, or lost their homes. It’s scary and extremely stressful, and heartbreaking for those who lose everything. My folks had to evacuate their town about 12 years ago, and about 400 homes burned. They narrowly missed having to evacuate again last summer.
The smoke from the Quebec wildfires caused several days of Code Red–Unhealthy air here. It was a unpleasant surprise! I know it’s nothing to what areas north of us got, but it was unpleasant. It was strange to see the thick haze, and the faint orange tinge to the otherwise grey-white sky. As I write this on Saturday, the sky looks about normal again, though the AQI is still in the moderate range. (Between pollen, car exhaust, and the like, that’s not unusual here in the summer.) Anyway, we do have a HEPA filter on our HVAC system’s internal air intake, but I’m not sure it’s enough, so we ordered a really good air purifier. I’m expecting more episodes like this. The wildfire fire season is just starting, and it’s going to be a hot summer… and clearly, with Canada burning again this year, it’s not just the West and Southwest that are at risk anymore. In fact, giv
Saturday we had a meeting of our fiber guild, followed by a class on inkle loom weaving. If you ever wove a strap or belt on a contraption with a bunch of thick dowels sticking out, that was probably an inkle loom. I borrowed the loom so I can finish my project. I don’t think I will do a lot of inkle weaving—there’s a limit to how many woven belts or straps I need—but it’s a good way to practice some basic weaving techniques.

What I’ve Been Reading/Watching
Reading: I finished rereading One Perfect Rose by Mary Jo Putney and reviewed it. Then I finished A Fatal Illusion by Anna Lee Huber (ARC). Currently, I’m reading Flowerheart by Catherine Bakewell. I’ve got several books on temporary pause, including Psyche and Eros (Luna McNamara; ARC) and The Lord of Stariel (A.J. Lancaster; it’s one of my #23in2023 books.)
Listening to: I finished A Short History of the World According to Sheep by Sally Coulthard. I’m about halfway through Tricked by Kevin Hearne. It’s book four in the Iron Druid readalong, and I missed the chat last weekend. I also need to read book five before the next chat on July 7! And as usual, I am listening to the Writing Excuses podcast. The Empty House by Rosamunde Pilcher is on temporary hiatus until I catch up on the Iron Druid books.
Playing (occasionally): Wordle, the NYT Spelling Bee (I got Queen Bee twice last week! That means you found all the words), and Pokemon Go.
Watching: A Campion two-parter, “Police at the Funeral.”

I was thinking that this week too. Used to be the West and SW had the wildfire problems, mostly, but now…
I see that Huber book popping up, and I need to get back to those.

The East Coast actually has a lot of wildfires, but they tend to stay pretty small and are contained fairly quickly… in part because there is more moisture than out West, and in part because there are fewer large tracts of wild land in the East, making it a) harder for wildfires to spread over large areas and b) easier for firefighters to access the fires in order to fight them. And I suppose having a denser population also makes it more politically imperative to stop fires immediately. But the East Coast also has a lot of fuel, in terms of trees and shrubs and the leaves and branches they drop… and some areas are already in droubt as well. (Including my state and county.) Add to that the higher temperatures expected because of the shift to an El Niño patter, and it would sadden but not surprise me to see wildfires on the East Coast as well as in Canada this summer.
Oh, and the Huber books continue to be good. I missed a few in the middle of the series; I want to go back and read those.

I hope it doesn’t get bad. Here in Michigan we had a pretty bad wildfire near grayling (upper middle of state)- it’s not unheard of to get fires here up there- but not as bad as what’s happening in Canada.
That’s good to know about the Huber books. I read the first verity Kent and need to get back to ’em.

The wildfires are horrible. So very scary.
I picked up Role Playing, too. It looks like a good one. Now to make time to read it 🙂
Have a great week!

I’ve seen some really good reviews of Role Playing, so I’m looking forward to it. 🙂

I hope your work eases up a bit with a less stressful index. We have 4 air purifiers in our house what with my allergies and Covid and now wildfire smoke, I’m glad we have them.

I still can’t decide on my Kindle First pick. There are two I am considering. Maybe I’ll grab one and preorder the other. Role Playing is definitely one of the contenders. I feel for everyone struggling with the fires and the smoke as well as for all the animals that have been harmed and displaced. We even got some of the smoke all the way down in WV which is rather shocking!

I’m reading the Huber book now and enjoying it. We’re having air quality warnings even here in Alabama so I can’t imagine how awful it is farther north and my heart breaks for Canada. That’s interesting about the inkle loom. Those wide woven straps are really popular for purses right now but I had no idea how they were made. I hope you are having a good week.

The smoke is so bad! I can’t imagine what it’s like closer to the fires. It must be terrifying.
