August 13, 2023 Sunday Post 6

The Sunday Post is hosted by the wonderful Kimberly, the Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news, recap the past week, take a look ahead, and showcase our new treasures—I mean books!

This week I’m also participating in The Sunday Salon hosted by Deb at Readerbuzz.

Last Week

In real life: We have had a quiet week of relaxing and enjoying family time, including a multi-person birthday party on Saturday. (I mean, we celebrated several people’s birthdays together, which we often do in this family.) I did have to spend some time going through the index proofs for my latest project, but that’s done now, and I’m free for the next few weeks.

My stepdad has fully recovered from his injuries from his fall last spring, thank goodness. It’s wonderful to see him out of the neck brace and walking easily.

I joined last Sunday’s Iron Druid Readathon chat about 12 minutes late due to technical difficulties (my laptop thought the wireless was turned off, and when that was fixed, it had forgotten the password for Robin’s WiFi.) Once I finally got connected, I really enjoyed the discussion.

What I’ve Been Reading/Watching

Reading: I finished Murder Most Royal by S. J. Bennett (ARC) and the newly released Shoemaker’s Wife by Celia Lake, both of which I enjoyed very much. The latter prompted me to reread Old as the Hills and Upon a Summer’s Day, the most recent books by the same author, which in turn led to rereading The Fossil Door, the book which introduces the main characters in those two books, as well as a related collection of short stories, Three Tales of Gabe and Rathna. (It’s an extra, available from the author, so there’s no cover photo.) Then I started rereading Eclipse by the same author. I’m also halfway through Claws and Contrivances by Stephanie Burgis (an ARC from the author.)

Listening to: Nothing this week. I need to start Shattered by Kevin Hearne, and I plan to continue with Season 6 of the Writing Excuses podcast. But I may not get to those for a week or two.

Playing: Wordle and the NYT Spelling Bee. Robin and I played Pokemon Go together several times. And we played several games of Wingspan (a terrific tabletop game) with my sister’s family.

Watching: Robin got us started on Ted Lasso and Good Omens, and we also watched an episode of Strange New Worlds (S2 E5).

Added to the Hoard

I didn’t buy, borrow, or acquire any books this week. (Hard to believe, I know!)

Stay kind and hopeful… and may your books bring you joy this week!

A multi-person birthday party is, I think, a great idea. You had a really good reading week, too. I’ve been quite taken with Strange New World; it seems like the producers and writers and actors are open to trying anything with that series. I haven’t gotten around to Good Omens, but I hope to soon.

Was so happy to chat with you last Sunday!

I need to start Shattered too. I’ve never read anything by Celia Lake, but it sounds like I should look her up seeing as reading one book by her prompted you to reread some of her previous books.

Hope you continue to enjoy your time with family! Glad to hear your stepfather has recovered. Have a wonderful week!

It was good to chat with you, too! Celia’s books are not for everyone, but I find her slow, gentle stories very appealing.
