November 12, 2023 Sunday Post 18

The Sunday Post is hosted by the wonderful Kimberly, the Caffeinated Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news, recap the past week, take a look ahead, and showcase our new treasures—I mean books!

This week I’m also participating in The Sunday Salon hosted by Deb at Readerbuzz, and Stacking the Shelves hosted by Marlene at Reading Reality.

Last Week

In real life: I’m still working pretty much around the clock. I did get out to cast my vote on Tuesday. And yesterday I went to my fiber guild meeting, where I taught a quick craft making little pompom gnomes. (We try to keep things light and easy in November!)

Pompom Yarn Gnome. A woman's hand holds a yarn gnome. Its deep green hat is made with yarn; it has a rolled brim and is topped with a tufted pompom. Below the hat, a brown pompom approximates a beard; there is no body. No eyes are visible beneath the hat brim, but the gnome's nose is indicated by a round wooden bead, affixed just below the brim of the hat.

Writing accountability: Between the time demands of work and the stress thereof, I haven’t written since the fourth day of NaNoWriMo. I do plan to start writing once I get this project turned in.

What I’ve Been Reading/Watching

Reading: I continued rereading the Arcane Society novels: The Perfect Poison, Fired Up, Burning Lamp, Midnight Crystal, In Too Deep, and Quicksilver. Mostly I’m reading them in the middle of the night, when I can’t sleep. As I mentioned last week, they are quick reads, and because I’ve read them before, I find them easier to put down once I finally get sleepy. (They weren’t easy to put down the first time I read them, though! I inhaled most of them in one or two sittings, the first time through.)

I didn’t get a chance to finish the new Percy Jackson book, The Chalice of the Gods (Rick Riordan), not because I wasn’t enjoying it, but because I can’t read physical books in the dark (see above regarding reading at night when I can’t sleep.) And unfortunately, I had to return it to the library unfinished, because there are a ton of people on the waiting list after me.

Listening to: I’m almost finished with Season 7 of the Writing Excuses podcast.

Playing: Only occasionally: Wordle, Connections, and the NYT Spelling Bee, and a little bit of Pokémon Go.

Watching: Nothing; I haven’t had the time.

I know what you mean about needing quick and relatively easy reads in the middle of the night! And I’ve recently finished Bookshops & Bonedust – I hope you enjoy it as much as I did:)). Have a great week.

I’ve had a fair bit of insomnia recently — probably the work stress combined with the change of seasons and going back on Standard Time. And while I can’t wait to start B&B, I know I won’t want to stop once I do!

That was my plan originally, but I’m finding that I have no mental energy/focus left by the end of the day… and I can’t afford to do it at the start of the day. Best of luck to you!

When does your work project end? I hope you get some time to breathe soon. 😯

I love the cover for Chaos Terminal. 📘

I requested Bookshops and Bonedust on both NetGalley and Edelweiss and was turned down both places. *raspberries* I requested that my library purchase the ebook, and I keep checking Hoopla for it. I also added it to my Kindle wishlist, so I will know if it goes on sale. I’ll be looking out for your review. 📙

I hope you’ve been having a less stressful week. ☀

With luck (and perseverance), I can turn in my project early next week — just in time to start Thanksgiving prep. Then I’m basically free until January.

I hope you can get hold of a copy of Bookshops & Bonedust!
