April 7, 2024 Sunday Post 12

The Sunday Post is hosted by the wonderful Kimberly, the Caffeinated Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news, recap the past week, take a look ahead, and showcase our new treasures—I mean books!

This week I’m also participating in The Sunday Salon hosted by Deb at Readerbuzz, and Stacking the Shelves hosted by Marlene at Reading Reality.

The Past Week

In real life: I saw the orthopedic PA this week. I was hoping to get out of the wrist-and-thumb brace, but a bone at the base of my palm is still a bit painful when pressed, so they still think it could have a fracture that is not visible on xrays. And a fracture of that bone can take six to eight weeks to heal. So it’s another four weeks in the brace. Bummer, as we used to say in my youth.

We met with a contractor about some of the work we need done on the house, and discussed replacing the deck as well. We’re still refining our ideas and deciding what is most important to us and what will make the most difference when we sell the house. We looked at flooring, chose something we both like, and got an estimate. We need some cosmetic work done in the bathroom; I’m hoping they can fit that in this month or early May. The rest will get done later this spring and over the summer, we hope.

Writing accountability: My writing goal is 250 words every day (fiction or other creative writing; blog posts don’t count.) I signed up for Camp NaNoWriMo for April, setting a monthly goal of 7500 words, and I’m using 4theWords to gamify my writing sprints. I wrote 4 days this week, working on a fanfic. Word count for the week: 2348 words (the goal was 1750.)

Urg! So sorry to hear about your hand still needing more healing – what a nuisance. I’m very impressed you’re managing to keep up any sort of wordcount with your writing target atm. Seeing the covers of the Mercedes Lackey books brought back happy memories of reading her books far longer ago than I care to recall… Have a great week, Lark.

Thank goodness for Dragon Naturally Speaking software — and having already trained it and worked with it for my day job. The words usually flow more easily when I can just type them, but at least I can get something down this way, and save the hunt-and-peck typing for fixing errors.

It does feel good. I keep having to remind myself that it’s OK to be writing fanfic instead of working on the novel or trying to write publishable short fiction. I’m writing original characters (rather than canon characters from the series) and placing them within the series world, so I get to work on my craft, practicing all the writing skills except worldbuilding (in other words, characterization, descriptive writing, dialogue, pacing, structure, showing-not-telling, and so on.) The fanfiction is fun, and the stakes are lower, so I don’t feel as intimidated by the magnitude of the task.

Oh how frustrating with your wrist! I hope it feels better very soon and you’re able to start physical therapy and have two working hands again. It’s so fun to start making progress on work around the house though I hate dealing with contractors. It’s always nice to have done though. I hope you’re having a wonderful week!
