The Sunday Post is hosted by the wonderful Kimberly, the Caffeinated Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news, recap the past week, take a look ahead, and showcase our new treasures—I mean books!
This week I’m also participating in The Sunday Salon hosted by Deb at Readerbuzz, and Stacking the Shelves hosted by Marlene at Reading Reality.
The Past Week
DON’T FORGET to update the excerpt!
In real life: Monday’s eclipse was really cool to watch (using our eclipse glasses, of course.) We weren’t in the path of totality, but at maximum, about 87.9% of the sun was obscured. It was enough to affect the quality of the light in an eerie way, although there was still plenty of light to see by. I didn’t get any pictures of the eclipse because I didn’t have a solar filter for my phone or camera, but I did take a few of my husband observing the eclipse through his eclipse classes.
I think we have decided on the flooring we want. I’ll call the flooring company this week for an estimate. They already came and measured, when we were looking at a different floor sample, but it just wasn’t what I wanted, so we kept looking. Now if I could just hear back from the contractors about the deck and some of the other work we want to do!
I spent Friday disassembling part of a thrift-store sweater to reclaim the yarn, photographing the process, and creating a presentation for Saturday’s fiber guild program. Let me tell you, it’s not easy to carefully rip out seams with one hand in a brace! I managed to do enough of it for the photos, at least. Reclaiming yarn from commercial sweaters is not something I will do often, but it’s a good way to both save the planet and get high-end yarns (like cashmere, silk or pure wool) for much less than I would spend buying them new.
Today, we’re visiting my cousin and her husband; they only live about 2 hours away, but we rarely visit. I’m going to try to see them more often.
Decluttering update: I cleared half a shelf plus the bottom cupboard of the kitchen bookcase (not books but other items), so I have room to spread out my cookbooks a bit more. As part of that, I emptied two plastic boxes of craft supplies and gave the contents to someone who can use them, keeping only a few paintbrushes.
Writing accountability: My writing goal is 250 words every day (fiction or other creative writing; book reviews don’t count.) In the past week: I wrote 6 days this week, all on a fanfic I’m working on. Word count for the week: 3049 words (the goal was 1750.) I am using 4theWords to gamify my writing sprints, and it definitely helps. I’m finally getting the hang of how the app works, and it’s a lot of fun. I’ll write up a blog post on it sometime.

What I’ve Been Reading/Watching
Reading: I reread Mercedes Lackey’s Herald Spy trilogy (Closer to Home, Closer to the Heart, and Closer to the Chest, which I reviewed in 2015, 2015 and 2018 respectively.) To be honest, I skimmed through a lot of Closer to Home, because I find the plot and the two most important secondary characters… I was going to say annoying, but let’s just said don’t care for them. The second book in the trilogy is better, both in terms of plot and also because those two annoying characters don’t appear.
I’m still reading and enjoying The Love Remedy by Elizabeth Everett (ARC.)
Listening to: The Writing Excuses podcast (season 9), and The Cartographers by Peng Shepherd.
Playing: NYT word games (Wordle, Connections, and the Spelling Bee.) And I did a few remote raids with Robin on Pokémon Go.
Watching: We started watching Star Trek: Discovery, Season 5.

Oh, it’s been a while since I read Mercedes Lackey. I should probably check out her books again. Great job on your writing and decluttering, I’m doing some organizing too and it’s a lot of mental labor but worth it!

I really enjoyed the cartographers when i read it i thought it was quite interesting. We are doing new floors in our home taking out the light brown we put in in 2006 and installing a darker brown, it that lock together laminate and it goes in entire down stairs of our home. ; We are also looking at a revamp on our front yard. I not a writer but my hubby is so i enjoy learning how people stay motivated. Hope you have a good reading week.

The Cartographers looks like a lot of fun. I’m hoping to get to it sooner rather than later. And I’m considering rereading one of Lackey’s Valemdar novels next month as a comfort read (but also to see how my memory of the series holds up). Happy reading!
