The Sunday Post is hosted by the wonderful Kimberly, the Caffeinated Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news, recap the past week, take a look ahead, and showcase our new treasures—I mean books!
This week I’m also participating in The Sunday Salon hosted by Deb at Readerbuzz, and Stacking the Shelves hosted by Marlene at Reading Reality.
The Past Week
In real life: My relative continues to heal. The extended family (just those in this town) got together for dinner Friday night, the first we’ve been able to do so.
Mr. Bookwyrm heads home today. (Although he did work remotely part of the time we were gone, he has to return to the workplace this week.) Since my work is much more flexible, I’ll stay here for another few weeks. I will miss him; I always do when we’re apart. But I’m grateful that he understands and supports my need to be here for a little longer.
I was saddened to read of Maggie Smith’s death this week. Her performances have brought me much pleasure over the years, particularly as Professor Minerva McGonagall in the Harry Potter films, as the Mother Superior in Sister Act, as the aged Wendy in Hook, and as the housekeeper in 1993’s The Secret Garden. (I admit, sheepishly, that I still haven’t watched Downton Abbey. Someday, I promise…)

What I’ve Been Reading/Watching (since 7/14/2024)
Reading: I finished rereading Wards ofhe Roses, which might be the end of my recent month-long binge-reread of Celia Lake’s books for now. There are still a few books I haven’t revisited, but they aren’t really favorites yet (though I did enjoy them.) For now, I seem to have returned to last spring’s reread of the Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes books; I picked up Pirate King where I left off last March (about a third of the way through) and finished it. Then I started the next book, Garment of Shadows, though I haven’t finished it yet.
I also began reading Feuds, the latest collection of Valdemar tales by Mercedes Lackey. Because it’s a collection of short stories, I can read it it small sections. Once I finish up my current work project, I plan to dive back into more ARCs, but for now, the only reading time I have is in a few stolen minutes here and there, and just before bed; I need something I can easily put down without losing track of where I am.
And because neither Garment of Shadows nor Feuds quite fits my need for calming before-bedtime reading, I reread Robin McKinley’s Beauty, then started The Fairy Godmother (Mercedes Lackey); both are longtime favorites of mine.
Playing: A bit more Pokemon Go than usual, and my usual NYT word games: Wordle, Connections, Strands, and the Spelling Bee.

It’s wonderful you can spend time there and help even though it upends your regular schedule and being home. Your husband seems to be understanding and helpful as well.

I keep thinking about rereading Beauty — I don’t know why, but it always sticks with me somehow!

That’s so great that you can stay longer and work remotely! Also great, of course, that your relative’s healing continues well.
I was also saddened to hear of Dame Maggie Smith’s passing. I had forgotten she was Wendy in Hook… I loved her in that first, before I ever saw her in anything else. (And I too have never seen Downton Abbey…)

I’ve got some Mary Stewart reading to do this month and am very much looking forward to it. I love a good reread and I don’t think there’s anything more soothing. I wasn’t aware that Maggie Smith was in any version of The Secret Garden. It’s always been one of my favorite books but somehow I’ve never watched any of the movies. I will have to look for the one she is in. I hope you’re having a wonderful week.

I love Mary Stewart, and usually reread my favorites every two to five years. I’ve been doing that since I was in my late teens and early 20s, so I can confidently say I have read some of my faves upwards of 10 or 12 times.
In my humble opinion, the Secret Garden movie with Maggie Smith is the best. Although the BBC mini-series from 1975 isn’t bad either, if you can find it.
