Last Week
Last Sunday, we saw South Pacific at the regional dinner theater. We really enjoyed it! The performances were quite good, and the singers were vocally very good as well. The show itself has some wonderful songs. It’s a little problematic in terms of race (I’m thinking in particular of how the character of Bloody Mary is written), but at the same time, the writers were challenging American racism, both through Nellie’s initial reaction to learning of Emile’s half-Polynesian children, and through Lt. Cable’s relationship with Liat. And Cable’s song, “You’ve Got To Be Carefully Taught,” is a manifesto against racism. It’s rather extraordinary that it was written in 1949.
Best news of the week: Our niece and her husband got to take their baby home! She is doing well, considering she arrived over a month early.
In related news: Clearly the baby blanket won’t be done in time for the baby’s birth, so I’ve set it aside for a few days, and I’m knitting a little hat as a welcome present.
Completely unrelated and less happy news: I’ve been getting an extraordinary amount of spam on the blog recently. It’s a pain to wade through it all before deleting it, but I have to, because the spam filter sometimes catches people’s legitimate comments. So if you don’t see your comment after a few days, and I don’t reply, please don’t hate me! Your comment might be lost in the nightmare that is my spam folder, or accidentally deleted.
And a heads-up: Between work and some other commitments, I probably won’t be around much for the next week or two. I’ll try to get a post written here and there, but don’t worry if I don’t manage it. I’m OK, just very busy!

What I’m Reading/Watching
Reading: I finished rereading Owlknight. (I reviewed the whole trilogy back in 2015: Book 1, Book 2, Book 3.) And I plowed through The Wallflower Wager (Tessa Dare; ARC) and Wrapped Up In You (Jill Shalvis; ARC.) I’m still reading Dragonfell (Sarah Prineas, ARC.)
Listening to: Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking. This week, I may alternate chapters with A Natural History of Dragons, A Wind in the Door, or some other fiction book, depending on how well Quiet keeps my attention.
Watching: We’re approaching the end of Eureka Season 4, and ditto for Star Trek: Discovery Season 2… just 4 episodes left for each. After that, there’s only one more season of Eureka, and no more Discovery until late 2020. (But hey: I can look forward to Star Trek: Picard!)

Good news about the baby getting home! 🙂
My husband is really excited for Picard. I’ve never been a trekkie but because of him I’ve seen a lot of them by accident/being in the same room and trying to ignore it but failing, lol. I imagine I’ll, therefore, end up watching Picard!

South Pacific is my mom’s favorite musical. I am glad you enjoyed the performance at the dinner theater. It sounds wonderful. I am glad your niece is doing well and able to go home with her parents. I used to get a lot of spam, but I switched to wpDiscuz plugin, and the problem went a way for me. Not sure if that was it, but the spam is non existent now.

Ugh, blog spam is yucky. I hope this deluge doesn’t last long.
Yeah, South Pacific is a little problematic with the race issues to a modern audience but I love that it was trying to address the issues it could for its time. It does show that we’ve come a long way — though there’s sadly still a long way to go.
