Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature/meme now hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. The meme was originally the brainchild of The Broke and the Bookish. This week’s topic is Authors Who Live in My State/Country.

Authors Who Live(d) in Virginia

Alphabetically by last name, here are 10 authors whose name you may recognize, who live or lived in the state of Virginia. If I’m sure they currently live here, there’s an asterisk by their name. And if I have read any of their work, their name is in bold type.

  1. Kwame Alexander (grew up in Virginia)
  2. David Baldacci*
  3. Kate Clayborn*
  4. John Grisham*
  5. Jenny Han (born and raised in Richmond)
  6. Thomas Jefferson (obviously)
  7. Barbara Kingsolver*
  8. Edgar Allan Poe (raised in Richmond)
  9. Margot Lee Shetterly (born and raised in Hampton)
  10. Maggie Steifvater*
  11. Jeanette Walls*

A few of those were a surprise to me, too. I knew about Maggie Stiefvater; she gave a talk on writing at the main library in our nearest small city when Robin was in their teens. Margot Lee Shetterly came to give a talk when she was touring Hidden Figures; so many people signed that the library had to arrange with the university to host it. And of course I knew about Jefferson and Poe. And I think I had heard that Kingsolver and Grisham were Virginia residents, though I had kind of forgotten. But I didn’t know about the others.

Great list! I did authors who live in Utah. It’s fun to see all the different states in this week’s TTT, and all the different authors who’ve lived or written there. 😀

Fun! The last state I lived in was New Hampshire – some authors who were born, lived, or wrote there include John Irving, Sy Montgomery, Dan Brown, J.D. Salinger, and Jodi Picoult. And Willa Cather was buried there – I made a memorable visit to her grave. But I never made it to the Robert Frost farm in my years there! I tried once, but got lost.

I think everyone has read at a little Poe, at least in the US. Most of us had one or more of his shorter works were assigned reading in (take your pick) middle school, high school, or college/university.
