My Favorite Rereads of 2022

I reread a lot. It’s a habit that goes back to my childhood, when I was a fast and voracious reader with limited access to the library, especially in the summer. I made do by reading my own books over and over. I came to love diving back into a familiar story and spending time with my fictional friends. Over the past 15 or 20 years, I’ve come to recognize that for me, rereading is not just a pleasure but also a way of coping with (or escaping) my anxiety. Reading something familiar, something where I know what to expect, lets me enjoy being immersed in another world without the heightened stress of wondering what will happen next.

So I reread a lot, more than the average person. In any given year, rereading makes up somewhere between a third and half of my reading. During months when I’m particularly stressed, that percentage can climb much higher.

Below are my favorites of the books I reread in 2022. Almost all of them are books I have read more than 3 or 4 times (lifetime), books that have been favorites for a decade or two. (Or three or four.) The exceptions are the Celia Lake books, which I discovered between November 2021 (Eclipse) and March 2022, and still managed to read twice before the end of 2022.

Books

Spindle’s End, by Robin McKinley

Series: The Protector of the Small, by Tamora Pierce

First Test, Page, Squire, and Lady Knight (Protector of the Small #1-4), by Tamora Pierce

The Blue Castle, by L. M. Montgomery

The Wounded Sky (Star Trek: The Original Series novel), by Diane Duane

The Fairy Godmother (Tales of the 500 Kingdoms #1), by Mercedes Lackey

Carry On and Eclipse (Mysterious Powers #1 and #3), by Celia Lake

Wards of the Roses (Mysterious Charms #4), by Celia Lake

Winter’s Charms (Albion novella collection), by Celia Lake

Audiobooks

Wild Magic, Wolf Speaker, Emperor Mage (The Immortals quartet #1-3), by Tamora Pierce. Full Cast Audio productions (reread) (Note: I thought I had listened to the 4th book in 2022, too, but apparently I forgot to log it in Goodreads, so I’m not actually sure.)

Audiobook Cover: The Secret Adversary, by Agatha Christie, read by Nadia May

The Secret Adversary (Tommy & Tuppence #1), by Agatha Christie (5 stars for the book, 4 for the audio)

I don’t reread as much now as I used to, and it’s not because I don’t love rereading favorite books. I just don’t have as much time. But if I did, The Blue Castle would make my favorites list, too. I love that book and have read it many times. 😀

That’s awesome you’re able to enjoy so much rereading and I can see why all of these are ones you’d want to revisit. I’ve reread both of the Tamora Pierce series as well, they’re fantastic. Especially the full cast audio of Immortals — I was floored by how good it is.

Very interesting. I rarely re-read and when I do it’s either because it’s a book I really love or because it’s a book I can’t remember very well and I want to re-read it so I remember what’s going on before I read the sequel. I re-read maybe 2-3 books a year, so I find it fascinating that so much of your reading is made up of re-reading.

    Happy TTT!

I’m a rereader too and The Blue Castle is one of my favorites! Most of my rereads tend to be MGs. I’ve reread a lot of the LM Montgomery books and pretty much all of the Elizabeth Enright books. And of course just about all the Agatha Christies!
