Today is International Children’s Book Day!
ICBD is celebrated each year on April 2, the birthday of Hans Christian Andersen. Many schools and libraries hold events, but if there’s nothing planned near you, throw your own impromptu celebration! Here are just a few ideas:
- Re-read a favorite children’s book
- read a book to children in your family
- find coloring pages and activities from children’s book artists, like these by Dr. Seuss, Jan Brett, Kevin Henke, Beatrix Potter, and Eric Carle
- download printables and activity pages featuring children’s book characters from HarperCollins or DLTK-Teach.com
- bake and decorate cookies or a cake to match your favorite book
- Get the kids together and act out a scene from their favorite book
Even if you don’t have a child around, you can still have fun. You’re never too old to read a good children’s book!
Check back here tomorrow for a review of my favorite children’s book for Easter, The Country Bunny and the Little Gold Shoes.

I was vaguely aware that this existed but didn’t realize it was today. This sounds like the prefect excuse to dig out some of my old favorites!

You get another chance in May – the week of May 4-10 is Children’s Book Week in the US. Maybe a good week to review some of the books you read to the Tornado?

Ahhh how could I have forgotten about this?! I’m a member of the Slovenian IBBY and have probably received 10 messages about this but I’m not as good with following e-mails as I used to be… So nice that you posted about this very important date! 🙂
I love HC Andersen’s stories, even though they’re often sad/creepy.

I love Andersen too, but he must have suffered greatly from depression, judging by his stories. They’re beautiful, but they’re all so sad!

I really need to put this on my blog calendar. Next month is Children’s Book Week and I have a bunch of reviews planned for it, possibly a giveaway.
