June 25, 2023 Sunday Post 16

The Sunday Post is hosted by the wonderful Kimberly, the Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news, recap the past week, take a look ahead, and showcase our new treasures—I mean books!

This week I’m also participating in The Sunday Salon hosted by Deb at Readerbuzz, and Stacking the Shelves hosted by Marlene at Reading Reality.

Last Week

In real life: I am working all weekend, but hopefully I am nearing the finish line on this project.

Coming up: Mr. Bookwyrm’s birthday is coming up. I forgot about Father’s Day until the actual day (during the previous week, I kept thinking Father’s Day it was today, not last Sunday!) We weren’t able to really celebrate it because we were both working last Sunday, so I want to plan a bit better for his birthday, and bake him a cake.

Tour de Fleece: Tour de Fleece starts this coming Saturday (July 1.) It’s a fiber spinning event that takes place during the Tour de France. The idea is to spin every day that the Tour de France rides; you rest on their rest days, and challenge yourself on the days when the bikers face the steepest mountain ascents. Many spinners use it as a time to focus on a large project or a new technique, but it’s fine to just spin 15 minutes a day. I’ve participated several times. This year, I’m co-captaining a team with another spinner from my fiber guild. (Tour de Fleece isn’t a competitive event; teams are just about camaraderie and support.) There are about 6 of us signed up so far. We’ll get together about once a week to spin, chat, and encourage each other. We also have a group chat in our guild’s Ravelry group. So watch for some posts about spinning coming up in July!

Looking Ahead

What I’ve Been Reading/Watching

Reading: I finished rereading The Edge by Dick Francis, which led me on a rereading binge fueled by insomnia and stress: The Danger, Break In, and Bolt. My preorder of Upon a Summer’s Day by Celia Lake came in, and I plowed through it. Currently, I’m in the middle of Murder at the Serpentine Bridge by Andrea Penrose (a buddy-read with my blogger friend Sophia Rose.)

Listening to: I’m still listening to Tricked by Kevin Hearne, when I have a few minutes, and the Writing Excuses podcast. I’m still in season 4 of the latter. I usually manage two or three episodes a week, which means it will be years before I catch up!

Playing (very occasionally): Wordle, the NYT Spelling Bee, and Pokemon Go.

Watching: I’ve been reading to unwind rather than watching, this week.

I’m a big Dick Francis fan, too! Particularly his early and mid-career books. I reread my favorites periodically, and like you, I have bought a few in audiobook format when they go on sale.

It should be streaming somewhere, but I haven’t yet looked to see where. Some fiber spinners like to watch the race (it’s how the spinning event got started, with several spinners who wanted to spin while they watched the cyclists), but at this point, a lot of us are just in it for the spinning, and aren’t really focused in the bicycle race. I might check in on the race occasionally this year, though.

Tour Dr Fleece sounds like fun. I need to start my diamond painting back up but right now don’t have a lot of motivation. Hope you have a wonderful week!

Tour de Fleece sounds like so much fun. We are fortunate to live in times when so many cool things are available.

I’ve always wanted to reread This Rough Magic and Ballet Shoes. I have both of them on my list of books to read before I head out of this world.

I’ve never heard of a fiber spinning event, but Tour de Fleece sounds fun. I think I’ve read This Rough Magic many years ago. I’ll have to check, but I’d like to revisit Mary Stewart. She was a favorite of my grandmother. I finished Tricked a couple of weeks ago and I’ve started Trapped for the read-along. I try to listen when my husband can too cause he enjoys the series as well.

Happy birthday to Mr. Bookwyrm. We didn’t really do anything for Father’s Day or Mother’s Day this year. I’m not fantastic about remembering either of them! I got Mistletoe and Murder too and am so excited about it. I’ve really enjoyed that series and of course I adore any Mrs. Pollifax book. Have a wonderful week and I hope you get your work finished so you can get some relaxing in and enjoy Tour de Fleece.

The important thing is celebrating and showing your love and appreciation, even if it’s not on the actual day. 🙂

Depending on my (freelance) work schedule, it may not be much, but hopefully I can manage to finish up at least one skein during TdF.
