The Sunday Post is hosted by the wonderful Kimberly, the Caffeinated Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news, recap the past week, take a look ahead, and showcase our new treasures—I mean books!
The Past Two Weeks
In real life: It has been a whirlwind two weeks!
Beginning on July 14, we spent about six days at a lake house in Minnesota with Mr. Bookwyrm’s side of the family. It’s the first time many of us have seen each other in five years, and the first time we met our grand-niece. It was wonderful to see everyone again! But the vacation was complicated by not one but four of the 15 family members coming down with Covid during our stay. Although we tried to take precautions after the first person tested positive on the first day (including having them stay elsewhere and only join us outside and mostly masked), the virus spread. One family left to try to stay healthy. So the final day of the vacation, we were down to about half the original group. Mr. Bookwyrm, Robin, and I stuck it out, and fortunately we seem to have avoided getting Covid (or anything else. I did feel kind of run-down the first few days home, but I tested negative several times, so it was probably just travel fatigue and stress.)
Speaking of travel, the CrowdStrike/Microsoft outage delayed our flight home on Friday, but we made it home around 2:00 am Saturday morning. Saturday morning, we discovered our internet was out. We tried everything to get it back up, including testing with a new modem. The cable company tried to fix it remotely, but it turned out the equipment at the cable box for our end of the street had been destroyed by lightning while we were gone. It took out our neighbors’ internet, too. We were offline until they finally fixed everything Tuesday afternoon, which is why I didn’t post a Sunday post last week.
I just found out a friend has been diagnosed with cancer for the second time, and has started chemo. I’m praying she will be all right.
Since we got home, we have been unpacking from the trip and frantically packing up basically 3/4 of our stuff before tomorrow morning, when the flooring people will arrive to tear out our old carpets and replace them with wood-look LVP. They should be done by Wednesday evening. I’m still trying to line up painters for after the flooring people are done. Then the deck people are supposed to start work the following Monday.
Writing accountability: Given how busy we have bee, I haven’t had the time or energy to write, neither on vacation nor since we got home.

What I’ve Been Reading/Watching (since 7/14/2024)
Reading and listening: I have had very little time for reading or even listening to books, since most of the time on vacation was spent with family, and most of the time since has been spent working on the house. I reread Owlknight (Mercedes Lackey; reviewed in 2015), then read a new book, The Meriwell Legacy by Stephanie Laurens. That lead me to reread the first in the Barnaby Adair series, Where the Heart Leads. I’m currently rereading The Spellshop (Sarah Beth Durst; ARC) to refresh my memory so I can write the review. I also started reading Do Me a Favor by Cathy Yardley, which I had preordered.
Listening to: I listened to podcast episodes from Smart Podcast Trashy Books and Science Friday . But mostly, I listened to film scores while I worked on the house.
Watching: It wasn’t a TV-watching vacation, but since we got back, we’ve watched National Treasure and an episode or two of Leverage.
Playing: Lots of Pokemon Go with Robin and our nieces and nephews. On my own, I played my usual NYT word games: Wordle, Connections, Strands, and my favorite, the Spelling Bee.

Oh wow, I’m so sorry to hear about all your troubles. Covid while on vacation is not fun, but I’m glad your immediate family didn’t get sick at least. And then the CrowdStrike and the internet being down and getting bad news from your friend. I’m sorry you’re going through it. I hope things get better for everyone soon!

None of the health issues are ours, thankfully, but we did and do worry about those who are or were sick. Thankfully, all my in-laws are recovering from Covid. I appreciate your thoughts for my friend.
