The Sunday Post is hosted by the wonderful Kimberly, the Caffeinated Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news, recap the past week, take a look ahead, and showcase our new treasures—I mean books!
This week I’m also participating in The Sunday Salon hosted by Deb at Readerbuzz, and Stacking the Shelves hosted by Marlene at Reading Reality.
The Past Week
In real life : On Monday, I tried to avoid news & social media as much as I could. Mr. Bookwyrm had the day off for MLK Day, so we focused on getting things ready for the new living room bookcases and TV stand, which involved much moving of (empty) bookshelves. The two that were in the living room are now in the the kitchen/dining room and the basement, respectively. We relocated several bookcases that were already in the basement to make room. I also sorted out some of my older mass market books to donate, since the print is uncomfortably small. (I’m sure there will be more to come. . . or rather, to go, but I wasn’t quite ready to let go of them yet.) And we brought a half-height bookshelf back upstairs, along with all its books; it’s my TBR bookshelf, and has been downstairs since the summer when we cleared out the upstairs for the floor installation.
The new shelves and TV console arrived on Wednesday. Mr. Bookwyrm assembled them over the next several days with a little help from me, then set up the new TV.
I received the page proofs for a freelance indexing project, so I will have less time for reading and blogging for the next few weeks.
I continue to avoid news and political posts on social media for the most part. Not that I’m ignoring what’s going on, but I’m trying not to spiral into anger, anxiety, or despair. I am appalled (though unsurprised) at the flurry of executive orders and actions undertaken by the new administration, and fearful of where we seem to be headed as a nation. I don’t plan to make this blog a political soapbox, but I will continue to speak out about, and link to articles on, the rights and freedoms of the vulnerable, the marginalized, and (at this point) all of us as ordinary citizens. And I will not pretend that what is happening is in any way normal, acceptable, or something to be celebrated.
5 Good Things:
- Last Sunday’s online read-along discussion of On the Edge was lively and fun, and I enjoyed seeing some virtual friends I hadn’t seen in a while.
- The new books-and-media wall in the living room looks good!
- I made beef stew this week, and baked oatmeal-raisin bars. Both came out pretty well.
- I’m making slow but steady progress on a knit vest for my dad’s birthday.
- Our temperatures have finally made it above freezing, so the snow is starting to melt off the roof and deck—and we were able to get out for a walk yesterday!

What I’ve Been Reading/Watching (since 7/14/2024)
Reading: I finished A Death in Diamonds by S.J. Bennett. I’m still reading Bayou Moon by Ilona Andrews for the read-along hosted by Books of My Heart, but hope to finish by tonight. I read another story from Buried Deep and Other Stories, Naomi Novik’s new short story collection (ARC.) And I’m rereading Shattering Dawn (ARC) by Jayne Ann Krentz, so I can write the review.
Listening to: I finished listening to The Fated Sky (Mary Robinette Kowal) and started on The Relentless Moon. I want to revisit the series before the new Lady Astronaut book comes out in March. I’m still alternating this with The Cartographers by Peng Shepherd, one of the books Robin gave me a few years ago. However, as of last night, both those books are on pause, because my second library hold for Shakespeare: The Man Who Pays the Rent (Dame Judi Dench) came in, so I’ll finally get to finish it.
Watching: Captain Marvel; Star Trek: The Next Generation, season 2 (rewatch); The Late Show with Stephen Colbert
Playing: Pokemon Go. Wordle, Connections, Strands, Spelling Bee, and Sudoku (all from the NYT.) And Wingspan on Steam or iOS.

Enjoy your new bookstands and tv! We have no more books in basement as we have given them all away! Downsized to make space for an office.
Enjoy your new look at home!

I hear what you say about the political situation – it seems half the world is sliding into some sort of extreme views, at the moment. Kudos to you for not completely blotting it out as I’m afraid I do when I just feel overwhelmed.
I absolutely loved The Relentless Moon – it’s my favourite of all her books to date. And I enjoyed love her historical fantasy series set in a Jane Austenesque world – the Glamourist Histories.Have a good week, Lark.

The news is very scary and depressing. I try to keep up, but more often than not I have to turn it over. Here in the UK things aren’t that great either and it is scary seeing what is happening across the pond.
It sounds like you had a productive week. We need to sort stuff, but with two young kids who need constant attention and amusement that doesn’t happen. I don’t mind though.
Have a good week next week.

I’ve been trying to avoid the news as much as possible, at least for this week so I can enjoy my release. But, yeah, it’s looking like it’s shaping up to be bleak.
On a brighter note, thank you for getting THE SONG OF ORPHAN’S GARDEN! Happy reading!!
