Ten Books on My Christmas Wish List

December 20, 2022 Top Ten Tuesday 10

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature/meme now hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. The meme was originally the brainchild of The Broke and the Bookish. This week’s topic is Books I Hope Santa Brings Me This Year.

I’m running out of shelf space, so I do a lot of my fiction reading on Kindle… and I usually either buy those myself when they go on sale or use the library, unless I am lucky enough to get an ARC. But there are some books and series that I just really want a physical copy of, either because I love them (hello, Tolkien and Naomi Novik!) or because I will probably end up marking them up (the writing books, mainly.) Of those, these are the top 10 that made my wishlist this year.

ETA: I did get six of these for Christmas! I’ve noted which ones below.

The Choice, by Nora Roberts. Can’t wait to read it! (Given by my husband!)

The Silmarillion, by J. R. R. Tolkien, illustrated by the author. I have a copy of the original hardcover edition (not a first printing, but the first edition), but this one has Tolkien’s own illustrations. (Given by my husband!)

How the Heather Looks: A Joyous Journey to the British Sources of Children’s Books, by Joan Bodger. A memoir of an American family’s travels in Britain in search of the landscapes and sites that inspired classic British children’s books, including Winnie the Pooh, Beatrix Potter, and the Swallows and Amazons series.

Crucible of Gold, Blood of Tyrants, and League of Dragons, by Naomi Novik. I love the covers of this new edition of the series! And my old mass-market copies are beat up (and I never owned the whole series anyway.) My wonderful husband gave me the first three last Christmas, and the second three for my birthday, so I hope these — the final three — will be under the tree this Christmas. (And they were!)

Self-Editing for Fiction Writers, by Rennie Browne and Dave King. Recommended to me by my writer child, Robin.

Reflections: On the Magic of Writing, by Diana Wynne Jones. Another of Robin’s recommendations.

The Writer’s Guide to Everyday Life in Regency and Victorian England, by Kristine Hughes. Sounds perfect when writing historical romance, historical mystery, or historical fantasy set in those eras. (Very useful for my current WIP.)

Visions of Beauty, by Kinuko Craft. This is a gorgeous collectible book by an artist whose work I love. But given the price, I know I’m just dreaming. (I really didn’t even dream that Mr. Bookwyrm would get this for me… but he did. And it’s absolutely gorgeous.)

I hope you enjoy all of these when you get to them! I just finished The Choice and enjoyed it but not quite as much as I enjoyed the rest of the trilogy. I’m adding How the Heather Looks to my TBR! It sounds like one I’d really enjoy.

I loved Naomi Novik’s Temeraire series, and these covers are beautiful! Hope you have a very happy holidays and get some of the books you’re hoping for.
