Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature/meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. This week’s topic is Top Ten New Series I Want to Start.
Today’s TTT topic suggestion defines “new” as “in the last year or two.” The problem is, there are barely 10 new series I really want to start, and more than 10 older series I’ve been wanting or meaning to read for a while. So. . . I’m going to tack those on the end. (Looking at this list, I seem to be headed into a fantasy & mystery binge; there’s a dearth of romance on here for some reason, probably because I’m already in the middle of so many romance series.)
New-ish Series
- the Golden City series (Kathleen Cheney)
- Rick Riordan’s new Norse mythology series (forthcoming)
- the Baskerville Affair series (Emma Holloway)
- the Lady Trent Memoirs (A Natural History of Dragons) (Marie Brennan)
- the Haunted Vintage mysteries (Rose Pressey)
- the Accidental Alchemist mystery series (Gigi Pandian)
- the Herald Spy series (Mercedes Lackey) (this is mostly loyalty)
- The Thinking Woman’s Guide to Real Magic series (Emily Croy Barker) (this is sort of cheating – I started but didn’t get a chance to finish)
- the Blackthorn & Grim series (Juliet Marillier)
- The Forbidden Library series (Django Wexler)
Older Series I’ve Wanted to Read for a While
- Megan Turner Whalen’s Thief of Attolia series
- Catherynne Valente’s Fairyland series
- Shannon Hale’s Goose Girl series
- Susanna Kearsley’s Slains series
- Judith Marillier’s Sevenwaters series
- Gail Carriger’s Parasol Protectorate series
- Tasha Alexander’s Lady Emily series
- Rebecca Tope’s Cotswold mysteries
- Jasper Fforde’s Thursday Next series
- Kristen Cashore’s Graceling series
- Aletha Kontis’s Woodcutter Sisters series

Great list! Juliet Marillier’s books have had me curious for some time, mainly due to the dreamy covers 🙂

I read about half of the first Sevenwaters book years and years ago, and have wanted to finish it ever since. Now I have the first four in hardcover (a gift from my mom) so I need to find time to read them.
Angie @Angela's Anxious Life
There are so many series out there that I want to start!! I am going to start waiting though till the whole series is out. I am tired of starting a series and then waiting a year or so for the next book.

I did that with Rick Riordan’s Heroes of Olympus series, which I’m reading now, and it was a good choice. There’s a cliffhanger ending at the end of book three – literally – and my daughter was on tenterhooks for a year. I’m glad I could go right on to book four!
Greg
I may try Riordan’s Norse books when they come out, kinda looking forward to those even though I haven’t read his Greek mythology books yet. A Natural History of Dragons looks good too. Neat idea.
I liked the first three Tasha Alexander books although I stalled out on the 4th one I think it was- I may skip that one and resume at some point.

I stalled out early on in the first Tasha Alexander but I know it was just a bad time for me to try to read it (too much else going on at the time) so I’m eager to try again. And I’m loving Riordan’s Heroes of Olympus series. He knows how to tell a good story, especially for kids!
Stephanie
There are a LOT on here that I also want to start especially The Fairyland series, and the Lady Trent series. The Accidental Alchemist series also looks interesting and I don’t currently have it on my TBR. I’ve got the second in the Lady Emily series from the library right now and have really enjoyed the Parasol protectorate series. I also love Jasper Fforde! The Golden City is one I’ve seen on a number of lists that I hadn’t taken much notice of and have now added to the TBR. Sigh… I love series:)

I love series, too. I’m giving serious consideration to taking 6 months to a year off from NetGalley (except books I really, really, really want to read – like Dreaming Spies) and working on my TBR pile and list, so I can get to some of these.
Katherine @ I Wish I Lived in a Library
Wait. What is the Forbidden Library series? Just the name alone intrigues me! I’m really looking forward to The Haunted Vintage series. I love the Annette Blair series that has a similar premise. The Thinking Woman’s Guide to Real Magic is on my TBR and I really want to try Lackey but maybe that isn’t the best series to start with? Great list!

I know, the name grabbed me, too. It’s either MG or YA fantasy, and sounds really fun. (You can click the cover to read about it on Goodreads.) I like the Annette Blair series too, but neither my used bookstore nor my library carry it, so I’m going to have to bite the bullet and just buy them. No, this wouldn’t be the place to start with Lackey. I’d suggest starting with either Arrows of the Queen and its sequels (with the understanding that as her first trilogy, it’s not as mature as her later writing – but it’s a good intro to the world) or the Last Herald-Mage trilogy (Magic’s Pawn, Magic’s Promise, Magic’s Price – one of the first mainstream SFF series to feature a gay hero), which is pretty good.
Chris David Hungley (WRLL)
Great picks.
Chris David Huntley (WRLL)
It’s Huntley and not Hungley

🙂 I do that sometimes, too.

Thanks! And thanks for stopping by.
Lory @ Emerald City Book Review
Two major recommendations for the Thief of Attolia and Graceling! They deserve to be at the top of your list. I hear such great things about the Fairyland series but I previously tried to read another book by Valente and I could not stomach it. I’m trying to put aside my prejudice and give it a chance.

Several people have been pushing me to read the Thief of Attolia books for years, and it’s high time I did.
Kimberly @ Turning the Pages
I hope you read a Natural History of Dragons soon it was wonderful 🙂

I’ve heard such good things about it!
anna (herding cats & burning soup)
Gail Carriger is on my list as well. Just so not enough hours in the day for reading.

I could happily read half the day, if I had the time!
Lisa Mandina (Lisa Loves Literature)
Jasper Fforde’s Thursday Next series is pretty good, although I think I have the last two to read. You can check out my list in the link below!

I’ve heard good things about it, and loved The Last Dragonslayer. 🙂
Cheryl @ Tales of the Marvelous
Ooh, read Fairyland!! Which I’m sure you’ve heard me say before. 🙂
I plan to read Dreamer’s Pool too–and I think that may be the only recent series I’m hoping to read soon. I’m intrigued by the prospect of a Norse series from Riordan, although I still need to pick up his Roman series…

I’m enjoying his Roman series, and the Norse one does sound intriguing.
Bea @Bea's Book Nook
A Natural History of Dragons and Valente’s Fairyland are on my list as well. And you MUST read the Parasol Protectorate. Some of your books are new to me, I must check them out!

I know; I love the Finishing School books, so I need to try the Parasol Protectorate series!
Melissa (My World...in words and pages)
Oh my. I have so many series on my shelves I want to get it. It’s heartbreaking to see them all there waiting for me, and time to skip by so fast. Time likes to torment those books and me. Grr. lol.
Hope you get to start some of your series some day soon. 🙂
Lark_Bookwyrm
Me too! And I hope you get to read some of yours.
Lily
I actually haven’t read any of the series you have listed here (so I can’t be like “drop everything and read…”) which is a shame because i’d love to do that but you have a few really great reads (from what others are saying) on this list! I’ll have to add some of these ot my tbr too!

I haven’t read them either, but I’m looking forward to them!
