A heartwarming cozy fantasy brimming with charm, hope, healing—and a touch of romance
I loved the first two books in this delightful cozy fantasy series, so I went into Sea of Charms with high expectations. I wasn’t disappointed! Sea of Charms enchants with the same whimsy, hopefulness, and warmth as its predecessors, The Spellshop and The Enchanted Greenhouse. And if anything, I thought the character development was even better, with a shade more depth, nuance, and empathy for the characters and their arcs.
Going in, I wasn’t sure if I would like Marin, but I soon changed my mind. By the time I was several chapters in, I had grown to love Marin and her companions, Ree (a sentient shrub) and Perri (a sea dragon.) With the addition of the composer Dax, whom Marin rescues from the burning capital city, her crew—or rather, her found family—is complete. I enjoyed their adventures as they sail among the islands, meeting and helping a variety of people along the way. I loved watching the trust and attraction grow between Marin and Dax, and as a musician, I absolutely adored the ending.
I read an ARC of this book, but I have preordered a hardcover copy for my shelves to go with the first two books, because I’m sure I’ll be revisiting this series more than a few times. If you’re looking for heartwarming, well-written cozy fantasy brimming with wonderful characters, personal-stakes adventures, great worldbuilding, charm, hope, healing, and a touch of romance, you really ought to give Sea of Charms a try. (And do read the other two books in the series as well!)
