Sunday Post – 1/11/15

January 11, 2015 Sunday Post 26

The Sunday Post is hosted by the wonderful Kimba, the Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news, recap the past week, take a look ahead, and showcase our new treasures – I mean books!

My Week (well, the last two weeks!)

I finally got my index done and turned in, so I could start enjoying time with my family again. As long as it was (4 weeks!), the vacation flew by much too fast. Today, Robin is on her way back to college and Mr. Bookwyrm and I are on our way back home. I will miss my my family, but in some ways it will be good to get back into my normal routines — and see our cats! I’m also looking forward to starting some of my New Year’s resolutions – it’s pretty hard to start working out or decluttering your home when you’re thousands of miles away.

I haven’t read any of hers yet, but have been wanting to for a while. She is often compared to Mary Stewart, whose books I love.

Great post on the pros and cons of shelving by genre, by the way! I shelve my own books by genre, though I agree that some books are hard to categorize. I think, though, that someone who hates SFF but loves mystery will probably not enjoy a steampunk mystery, while someone who loves SFF but doesn’t read contemporary or historical mystery would probably enjoy the steampunk mystery anyway. That sort of calculus makes it a little easier to decide where to shelve a cross-genre book. I also agree that it’s easier to browse for what I’m in the mood for if books are sorted by genre. Thankfully, my library does this, at least for adult SFF, mystery, and paperback romance. (Hardcover romance, such as there is, ends up in general fiction.) The YA section, on the other hand, mixes all the genres together – but then, there aren’t as many books in that section, so browsing is less overwhelming.

(In case anyone is wondering why I’m replying to Stephanie’s post – and it’s excellent; go read it! – on my blog rather than hers: for some obscure and indecipherable reason known only to her blogsite and my computer, I literally cannot post on her blog. When I try, nothing happens. We’ve tried to solve it but it remains inscrutable as well as unsolvable. No one else seems to have a problem, so go read her post and join the conversation!)

You’re process for deciding where to shelve something make sense. I can see how it might get laborious for a librarian or publisher for that matter to ask these questions for every book but I selfishly wish they would. I think what is really needed is some kind of virtual library experience where each patron can re-arrange the shelve as they like and things with more than one genre tag can have a copy displayed on each appropriate shelf. It would have to be a realistic virtual reality so it still felt like you were wandering, browsing shelves. This is totally do-able right, lol! Anyway, I’m glad I’m not the only one that still likes my genre sections.

That was definitely a selling point for me! I’ll be sure to review once I’ve read one. The Winter Sea is on my must-read-in-2015 personal challenge (“Top of the Hoard”) so I will be getting to it sometime in the next 6 months.

That sounds like a really good idea to me, though almost a duplication of Goodreads. Hmmm… there’s a possibility for Goodreads – if libraries could tag all the books they own, and readers could choose which libraries they use, so that when you looked at a book you could see immediately if your library had it or not.

If only we didn’t have to sit here in an airport for 9 hours first… Our daughter’s plane left early this morning, and ours doesn’t leave until around dinnertime. Oh, well, it’s a great opportunity to fit some blogging in! I’ve already written one review and a Top Ten Tuesday post. Can’t complain about that!

I’ve heard really good things about Sarah Morgan’s contemporary romances, so I thought I would give her a try. Her O’Neill brothers series (I think that’s what it’s called?) went on sale this winter (each book at a different time) so I snapped them up, and then the Puffin Island book came up on NetGalley. So I hope I like her as much as everyone else does! But the people recommending her are all people I trust, so I’m not worried. 🙂

He was enormously talented, at least at writing and illustrating and inventing languages. Apparently he wasn’t quite as good at keeping his students interested in Anglo-Saxon literature, though. My daughter tells me that Diana Wynn Jones took his course at some point, and by the end of it, there were only two students left (DWJ and someone else.) I find that almost endearing; it’s nice to know he wasn’t a towering giant in everything!

I LOVE the cover of the Princess Academy! I saw that book someplace else and said I wanted to read it but can’t remember where, I’m having a senior moment lol but I hope you like it 🙂 Let me know what you think about it!

Enjoy all your new reads, Lark and have a great week!

I was literally jumping up and down when I got the email saying I’d been approved for that one! I loved the first book and really liked the second, so I’m excited for the third – especially since I didn’t know if she would write another. Thanks for stopping by, and have a great week!

  2. Greg

The PopSugar challenge sound great, I may want to do this one. 🙂 Your reads all look quite varied too, I’m curious about The Letters of JRR Tolkien.

I hope you do the PopSugar challenge; I think it will be fun! And I have no idea when I’ll get to dig into the Tolkien letters, but they looked interesting. I was a total Tolkien geek when I was in high school and college; I’m still a huge fan, though my knowledge of the minutiae isn’t as good as it once was. 😉

  3. Berls @ Fantasy is More Fi

LOL yeah, it can be hard to declutter when you’re not home! But it’s a good excuse 😉 It’s hard to believe we’re already back to school – Franky started this week (high school) and I just helped my brother work out his schedule for his classes at University, starting next week. Time flies by way too fast! Hope you have/had a good safe trip home.

Time does go by too fast! I’m missing Robin already – she flew back to college this morning. We’re flying home this evening, so thank you for the good wishes!

  4. Katherine @ I Wish I Lived in a Library

You got the Sarah Morgan! I’m so excited about it. I see you also got her 2nd book in the O’Neal series. I liked it but not as much as Sleigh Bells. I’m starting Teardrop Lane tonight and am looking forward to reading it. It is always so good to be home. I can’t imagine being gone 4 weeks. I’m sure you were just ready to collapse! Have a great week!

I did! I’ve actually picked up all three of the O’Neal series as they’ve gone on sale in the last month or two. Enjoy Teardrop Lane!

  5. Angie @Angela's Anxious Life

There is nothing like getting home and seeing your cats. My two precious cats I hate leaving home alone every time. We do have a wonderful cat sitter. But I am always afraid I am going to leave and one is going to be sick and die!! They are both diabetics and have been for a few years so I always worry!! So hard!

Of course you worry! Our neighbor takes very good care of our two, and I worry anyway… Our cats are in pretty good health, although one of them seems to be losing weight and we don’t know why. Her coat is in great shape, her eyes look fine, and she’s acting normal (well, maybe a little more talkative than usual, but otherwise normal), so we’re not too worried yet. They were certainly glad to see us home, though! Both have been coming up to us for petting and making much of, and Tasha, as I mentioned, has been quite talkative. She’s the more active of the two anyway, both physically and vocally; Thomas is pretty placid and doesn’t move around much.

    • Lark_Bookwyrm

Thanks, Bea! We got home very late last night; I’m only just getting started on unpacking and housecleaning (the house elves must have been on vacation, too.) But the cats are very glad to see us!

The Tolkien book was on sale at Amazon, but unfortunately it’s back up to $9.99. It might be available at your library, though, in print if not in ebook.
