September 15, 2024 Sunday Post 3

The Sunday Post is hosted by the wonderful Kimberly, the Caffeinated Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news, recap the past week, take a look ahead, and showcase our new treasures—I mean books!

This week I’m also participating in The Sunday Salon hosted by Deb at Readerbuzz, and Stacking the Shelves hosted by Marlene at Reading Reality.

The Past Week

In real life: My husband and I are in New Mexico. We’re here to help a family member who is recovering from surgery. (To guard their privacy, that’s all I will be saying on the subject.) Both of us also brought work with us. So it has been a busy and somewhat stressful week!

I know that most people, when they think of New Mexico, think of flat, open desert; saguaro and prickly pear cacti; and broiling temperatures. Actually, it’s gorgeous here in Los Alamos. This is a basically a mountain town, at around 7,300 feet (2,225 m.) The altitude and the mountains make a big difference in both the climate and the vegetation. Not many cacti here, though there are a few. But there are aspens, some cottonwoods, juniper, and both piñón and ponderosa pines, along with a wide variety of nonnative flora in people’s yards. The weather is perfect at this time of year; the temperatures this week have been in the upper 70s, and there have been several afternoon or nighttime rainstorms to cool things off and water the trees and plants. Fall has just started here, with deciduous trees beginning to show the first hints of color. I’ll try to get a few photos this week, if I can.

What I’ve Been Reading/Watching (since 7/14/2024)

Reading and listening: Given current stress levels and lack of free time, I continued binge-rereading my way through Celia Lake’s entire ouvre, finishing Magician’s Hoard and Sailor’s Jewel this week.

I also finished The Muse of Maiden Lane by Mimi Matthews (an ARC; due out in November.) I loved it! I had been savoring it in small bites, because it’s the final book in the Belles of London quartet, but even small bites will finish a treat eventually. By the way, Ms. Matthews just announced the first book in her next series, so I’m excited for that! Rules for Ruin, the first book in the Crinoline Academy series, is due out in May 2025.

Playing: A bit more Pokemon Go than usual, and my usual NYT word games: Wordle, Connections, Strands, and the Spelling Bee. I also played a few games of Wingspan on Steam.

Stay kind and hopeful… and may your books bring you joy this week!
