December 15, 2024 Sunday Post 3

The Sunday Post is hosted by the wonderful Kimberly, the Caffeinated Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news, recap the past week, take a look ahead, and showcase our new treasures—I mean books!

This week I’m also participating in The Sunday Salon hosted by Deb at Readerbuzz, and Stacking the Shelves hosted by Marlene at Reading Reality.

The Past Week

In real life: Last weekend, we drove across the country to Robin’s house, arriving Monday night. Tuesday morning, the three of us drove to northern Utah to spend five days with my dad and stepmom. We’ll return to New Mexico tomorrow.

While here, I also got much of my remaining Christmas shopping done. We are very much a book-giving family; fully 3/4 of the gifts we are giving this year are books in one format or another, which makes shopping online relatively easy. I rarely brave the crowds anymore; I pick things up in local stores throughout the year, and make some of my gifts; the rest I order.

5 Good Things: Some good things from this week.

  1. Much of the drive from Los Alamos to the Salt Lake Valley is beautiful, and I enjoyed the scenery and the snow-capped mountains along the route.
  2. My dad and stepmom are in reasonably good health; in particularly, my stepmom is doing better after a bout of pneumonia last month.
  3. I got much of my remaining Christmas shopping done!
  4. I was able to drive my dad to one of his appointments so he didn’t have to drive in the snow.
  5. Robin took on cooking most of the meals while we were here, and they were delicious.
  6. Okay, six this week. I’m knitting a cowl without a pattern. This is terrifying (what if I mess up?) but also satisfying. Creating my own patterns is something I want to learn to do, and being brave enough to make it up as I go is the first step.

What I’ve Been Reading/Watching (since 7/14/2024)

Reading: I continued reading This Will Be Fun by E. B. Asher. (Spoiler alert: Yes, it’s fun.) My preorder of Elemental Truth by Celia Lake showed up on my Kindle Thursday night, and I plowed through it in two sessions. But mostly I spent time with my family and did a little Christmas shopping.

Listening to: On the drive to Utah, we began listening to The Cartographers by Peng Shepherd, read by several narrators.

Watching: Last Sunday night, we arrived at our hotel just in time to watch The Avengers (2012). And we saw a few Christmas music specials with my dad and stepmom.

Playing: Pokemon Go (occasionally); also Wordle, Connections, Strands, Spelling Bee, and Sudoku.

Purchased or Free (Kindle)

Kindle: A Love By Design; Love, Comment, Subscribe; It’s All A Game: The History of Board Games from Monopoly to Settlers of Cataan; The Wedding Witch (I read the ARC, but wanted to own the series); Elemental Truth (a preorder which released Friday)

Stay kind and hopeful… and may your books bring you joy this week!

Wonderful you are having this time with family and are able to have the time to travel. I’ve changed existing patterns and more rarely created my own. I usually start from an existing one and make changes for things like knitting it seamless.

Sounds like you’re having a wonderful time! So glad your dad and stepmom are doing well. I had pneumonia a few years ago and it took forever to feel like my regular self. I hope you’re having a wonderful week!
