June 28, 2026 Sunday Post 0

The Sunday Post is hosted by the wonderful Kimberly, the Caffeinated Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news, recap the past week, take a look ahead, and showcase our new treasures—I mean books!

In addition, I often participate in The Sunday Salon hosted by Deb at Readerbuzz, and in Stacking the Shelves hosted by Marlene at Reading Reality.

The Past Week

In real life: Our extended-family vacation was wonderful. It was great to spend time with Mr. Bookwyrm’s siblings and their wives, and all the nieces and nephews (and two grand-nieces) on that side of the family. We were in Michigan, and the weather was beautiful; it never got over 78F. The place we rented had two adjacent houses, one of which had a large kitchen, dining room, deck, and living room, so we had plenty of room to gather as a large family (all 16 of us!) but also to break into smaller groups. And everyone had their own bed, so no one had to sleep on a couch as in previous years. All in all, it was a great reunion.

We arrived home late Friday night, where I found a lovely surprise. An online acquaintance, someone from the fountain-pen channel on one of my favorite author-related Discord servers, sent me two “starter” fountain pens to try: a pretty green Pilot Metropolitan and a blue Platinum Preppy, plus a syringe for refilling cartridges, and 15 ink samples!!! (She’s aware that I already have several Lamy Safaris and Jinhao 82s, and some Diamine inks.) All she asked in return was that I pick up some books by any of the authors on the server, which I am happy to do. It’s incredibly kind of her, and I will be sure to pay it forward.

6 Good Things:

  1. Our newest great-niece is adorable! So is her older sister.
  2. I had some good talks with various family members. I tend to hang out as much or more with the young people as with my siblings-in-law. Apparently I’m considered the “cool aunt,” in part because I share many of the same nerdy/geeky interests they do; this delights me.
  3. Robin, our two nieces, and our nephew’s new wife went to a yarn shop together. Yes, I bought a little yarn. And spinning fiber. It’s gorgeous; I couldn’t resist.
  4. Several of the family saw sandhill cranes around the property. Alas, the only one I saw was pretty far away, but Mr. Bookwyrm got some good photos. I did see a wild turkey, barn swallows, and the usual assortment of robins, sparrows, and a few starlings. And we all enjoyed looking at the horses.
  5. Everyone got there safely; most of us are already safely home; and thankfully, no one got sick this year! (As opposed to 2024, when people kept coming down with Covid.)

What I’ve Been Reading/Watching

Reading: I finished Eclipse (Celia Lake), and followed it with two related novella-length collections of extra scenes/stories: Tea and Meetings and With All Due Speed. I also finally finished up Agnes Aubert’s Mystical Cat Shelter (Heather Fawcett; ARC), which will definitely appeal to Howl’s Moving Castle fans. (I loved it.)

I started reading Solace Island by Meg Tilly, which I picked up on a whim a week or two ago when it was on sale, but I DNF’d it after reading a few chapters at both the beginning and end of the book. It just wasn’t working for me. After that, I decided to start Twig’s Traveling Tomes (Gryffin Jones; ARC), which is delightful so far.

Listening to: Still listening to book #4 in Jayne Ann Krentz’s Arcane Society series, The Third Circle. (Not that I have had a lot of time for listening, since I was enjoying time with the extended family, but I squeezed in a few minutes here and there.)

Watching: Star Trek: The Next Generation, S7 E11 (a rewatch)

Playing: Since Robin and most of our nieces and nephews play Pokémon GO, I was more active in the game than I have been in months. I also played a little Wingspan (phone app) this week, as well as a few of my usuals: Wordle, Connections, Strands, Spelling Bee, and Sudoku.

Ten Years Ago I Was Reading…

I saw this idea on Lisa Loves Literature, who got it from Musings of a Bookish Kitty (who I also follow.) I published this review 10 years ago this week, between June 22 and June 28, 2016.

Stay kind, hopeful, and steadfast… and may your books bring you joy this week!
