April 28, 2024 Sunday Post 15

The Sunday Post is hosted by the wonderful Kimberly, the Caffeinated Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news, recap the past week, take a look ahead, and showcase our new treasures—I mean books!

This week I’m also participating in The Sunday Salon hosted by Deb at Readerbuzz, and Stacking the Shelves hosted by Marlene at Reading Reality.

The Past Week

In real life: We bought a new piece of furniture, a lovely mid-century (but 18th-century or early 19th-century style) china hutch, from an estate sale. Getting it home turned out to be quite the challenge, requiring us to rent a truck and (because my wrist is still in a brace) hire a teenager to help with the lifting. But it’s now in our kitchen/dining area, and looks gorgeous; it will give us more storage for dishes as well as a place to display more of our special things.

We got an estimate from the tree guy, so now we just need to set a date for the work. If only the other contractors were as good about getting back to us about the deck and the inside work we need done. (We did sign a contract for the floors, if you missed that news last week.)

I’m finally getting back to exercising, specifically walking, either on the treadmill or outside. I walked three days this week, starting Wednesday. I’m pretty out of shape, but I’ll keep working at it.

And I saw the orthopedic PA this week. The bone in my right wrist/hand has apparently healed (yay!) She told me I can gradually cut back on wearing the brace, and start doing some gentle stretches to regain range of motion. My hand is still a little swollen compared to the left hand, especially the thumb, but she said that could take months to go down all the way. The wrist and thumb are both stiff and there is still some pain with certain movements, lifting, and grasping things — more so than there was three weeks ago, which makes me think a lot of it is due to the enforced inactivity. I will go slowly so I don’t reinjure it.

Decluttering update: We cleared out a desk we kept in our kitchen/dining room to make room for the new china hutch. We threw out some of the desk’s contents, gave some away, and figured out new storage spots for the rest. I plan to sell the desk, along with some other items. And we set up a bookcase downstairs to organize some of the books I’m decluttering.

Writing accountability: My minimum goal is 250 words every day (fiction or other creative writing; book reviews don’t count.) I set the daily goal so low because it feels achievable, which means I’m more likely to start… and it’s working. In the past week: I wrote every day this week, all on the first draft of a fanfic I’m working on. Word count for the week: 6,373 words (the goal was 1,750 for the week.) I am using 4theWords to gamify my writing sprints, and it definitely helps to motivate me. I have now written more than twice my Camp NaNoWriMo goal of 7,500 words in April. So far this month, I have written 16,823 words. Woohoo!

Looking Ahead

What I’ve Been Reading/Watching

Reading: I continued reading The Ornithologist’s Field Guide to Love by India Holton (ARC) and NaNoWriMo Inspirations by Dave Farland.

I finished rereading Exile’s Honor by Mercedes Lackey. I started the sequel, then decided not to reread it right now (one POV character makes a monumental relationship mistake, and I’m just not up for the angst at present.) So instead, I went on to reread Take a Thief. These rereads are my nighttime books; the advantage is that I know them really well, so it’s easy to stop reading when I’m ready to fall asleep.

Listening to: I put The Cartographers by Peng Shepherd on pause temporarily, because my library hold for Bookshops & Bonedust finally came in. And I’m almost done with season 9 of the Writing Excuses podcast.

Watching: Star Trek: Discovery, Season 5 (episodes #1 and #2 so far.) We also started a Nature miniseries on raptors (eagles, hawks, owls, vultures, and the like.) Since Mr. Bookwyrm had to work late several nights, I started watching the new-ish adaptation of Agatha Christie’s Tommy & Tuppence mysteries, Partners in Crime. The adaptation takes a lot of liberties with the plot and characters, and I’m not sure yet whether I like it or not. If I weren’t comparing it to the books, though, I would say it’s pretty good.

Playing: Some of the NYT word games, mostly Wordle, Connections, and the Spelling Bee. And occasionally Pokémon Go.

I’ve always heard good things about MercedesLackey – which book would you suggest I start with? Congrats on the decluttering! I agree with Makr – a little each day does wonders!

Hope your wrist continues to be on the mend. Good omens was such a good book and the way they stretched out the tv show is quite interesting. Have a great reading week.

A lot of the houses in my neighborhood have a built in china hutch in the corner of their dining rooms, but not mine, alas! So I applaud the addition of your new furniture.

Also, I hope you join in the Ozathon at Lory’s blog.

So glad to hear about the good news regarding your hand! Your new item of furniture sounds lovely. I have a kitchen dresser that we had built when we had our kitchen revamped back in 2004 and I’m very fond of it. I’ve watched the TV version of Good Omens and thoroughly enjoyed it – I hope the audiobook is as much fun. Have a great week, Lark.
