June 9, 2024 Sunday Post 10

The Sunday Post is hosted by the wonderful Kimberly, the Caffeinated Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news, recap the past week, take a look ahead, and showcase our new treasures—I mean books!

This week I’m also participating in The Sunday Salon hosted by Deb at Readerbuzz, and Stacking the Shelves hosted by Marlene at Reading Reality.

The Past Week

In real life: I spent most of the week at an indexing conference. It was my first in-person group outing where I wasn’t masked the entire time, which made me somewhat nervous, but other than that it was a wonderful experience. I hadn’t been to a conference in over 15 years, and it was great to meet up with colleagues I hadn’t seen in years, and get to know new colleagues whom I knew only through Zoom or discussion lists. The conference sessions and panels were interesting and informative, and the college campus where we met beautiful. I came away refreshed and fired up.

While I was gone, Mr. Bookwyrm made some progress packing up our belongings to store downstairs. We hope to get the carpet pulled up and new floors laid around the end of June, but it will be a push to get ready in time. I started moving my most fragile books to some recently-emptied shelves downstairs.

Our monthly Guild meeting was yesterday, which coincidentally was also Worldwide Knit in Public Day. So I went to the meeting and then spent a few hours knitting in public with a friend.

Decluttering: I didn’t have time to do any decluttering this week.

SAVE: I am trying out the Pango Books app to sell some of the books I’m pruning. It’s fairly easy to use, but I’m not sure it’s worth the time and effort. Still, I wanted to give it a try. So far I have only uploaded a couple of books, and my “shop” isn’t really live yet. But if you’re curious, I will be on Pango as The Bookwyrm’s Hoard.

Writing accountability: My minimum goal is an achievable 250 words every day (fiction or other creative writing; book reviews don’t count.) I didn’t write at all this week. I didn’t have time or energy to write during the conference, and I’ve been catching up on sleep and work on the house since I got back. But I plan to get back to writing in the coming week. Word count for the week: 0 words (my goal was 1,750 for the week.) I am using 4theWords to gamify my writing sprints.

What I’ve Been Reading/Watching

Reading and Listening: I had very little time or energy for reading this week. I reread The Blue Sword by Robin McKinley (a perennial favorite!) I continued listening to A Desperate Fortune by Susanna Kearsley, which is also a reread.

Listening to: A Desperate Fortune (Susanna Kearsley, read by Katherine Kelgren.) In podcasts, I had been working my way through season 10 of the Writing Excuses podcast, but I didn’t have time for it this week.

Watching: Star Trek: Discovery, S5 E7.

Playing: Some of the NYT word games, mostly Wordle, Connections, and the Spelling Bee. The NYT is beta-testing a new game called Strands, which I like. I also played Pokémon Go occasionally, when I could squeeze in a few minutes.

Added to the Hoard

Purchased or Free (Kindle, print, or audio)

Kindle: The Celtic Twilight: Faerie and Folklore

(Click title for Goodreads page or my review.)

Stay kind and hopeful… and may your books bring you joy this week!

I read The Hero and the Crown back in April. The Blue Sword is near the top of my tbr. I might get to it by the end of this year.
    Have a great week.

I should reread The Hero and the Crown. It’s been a long time since I first read it. It was really good, but for some reason it didn’t capture my heart and imagination like The Blue Sword did. I hope you love that one whenever you get to it!

I was (and remain) nervous about not masking in public. But it wasn’t feasible with meals in the dining hall, for instance. I did mask in other situations where there were a lot of people around. During meals, I tried to choose seats where I had more space between me and other people. But I was a bit nervous about it the entire time I was there.

I gave up on selling books i unhaul and they took forever to sell if they sold at all. So now i check my local library if it a more current book and see if they have it yet if not i offer it to them to add to their collection. Older books that are kind of beat up i donate to free library and then ones that the library don’t need i upload to paperback swap. The benefit of this is for every book you mail out once it requested by someone you get a credit to request a new book. Have a great week. Hope you have good luck purging your books. /

I meant to take that paragraph out lol! I haven’t actually set the store to “live” yet. I suspect I may decide, as you did, that it’s not worth the effort, but I thought it would be fun to try it out.

Glad you enjoyed your conference so much, Lark. It’s always so much more invigorating to talk to people face to face – though I can understand why you felt so wiped once you returned home again. It’s also exhausting! Best of luck with selling the books.
