NOTE: Last Sunday’s post failed to post as scheduled. Apparently the scheduling function didn’t work yet again; it has been flaky for a while. My apologies, and I’ll keep trying to figure out why some scheduled posts go up on schedule, and others don’t. I have included last week’s books and comments in this week’s post.
The Past Two Weeks
I stopped by the used bookstore two weeks ago with a couple of boxes of books to sell. They took about a box of them. I browsed quickly for vintage, antique, and collectible books, but didn’t find any that I was interested in. After that, I took the remaining box to the library bookshop to donate the books. There, I picked up a few books on impulse, including an annotated edition of Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. I had first learned this edition about a few months ago, when I researched the book before reading Rick Riordan’s Daughter of the Deep. I wanted to get a copy then, but couldn’t find one at an affordable price. So this was a great find!
I hope you had a happy Father’s Day, if you celebrated it. I couldn’t be with either of my dads on the day, (biological and step-), but I sent cards and called them. And of course I had a card for Mr. Bookwyrm, who is such a wonderful dad to our Robin! I also hope you had a good Juneteenth.
The weather has varied between hot and humid, drier and temperate, and cool and rainy. I’ll take the latter two, but not so much the first. It was gorgeous last weekend, perfect for a nice walk, but it’s back to hot and humid this weekend. When it’s hot, I tend to stay indoors; I don’t handle heat well. Thank goodness our air conditioning is working!
Like many in the US, I am dismayed by recent Supreme Court rulings and their implications for the future. And dismayed by the current state of our politics and democracy as well. It’s hard not to give in to despair. But I will continue to try to make my voice heard, not only by voting but by contacting my elected representatives to let them know my views.

What I’ve Been Reading/Watching (past 2 weeks)
Reading: I finished Remember Love by Mary Balogh, the first in her new Ravenswood series, and read three more ARCs: You Were Made to Be Mine by Julie Anne Long, Sound of Darkness by Heather Graham, and The Littlest Library, by Poppy Alexander. I also read (or rather, reread for the first time in 15 or 20 years) Murder in Mesopotamia for #ReadChristie2022, and I reread Losing Ground by Catherine Aird. (The latter is one of the few Inspector Sloan books I didn’t really like the first time I read it. I reread it to see if my opinion had improved. It has not.)
I’m currently reading Aunt Dimity and the Enchanted Cottage by Nancy Atherton and The Siren of Sussex by Mimi Matthews.
Other books technically “in progress” but currently on hiatus are Miss Percy’s Guide to the Care and Feeding of British Dragons by Quenby Olson and The Forgotten Beasts of Eld by Patricia McKillip, which I really want to get back to.
Listening to: I finished A Psalm for the Wild-Built, by Becky Chambers. My second hold on Invisible Women by Carmen Criado-Pérez came in, so I was able to finish this week as well.
Watching: About a week and a half ago, we finished Around the World in 80 Days (the 2021 series starring David Tennant), and are now watching Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. We’re about 5 episodes in, and enjoying it so far. And last night, we streamed The Lost City, which was fun.

Yeah, like you I’m very upset and dismayed by the state of our country. I’m trying to stay focused on the positives – like my Dante – and the things I can do to be part of the fight – vote, call representatives (not that it makes much difference here in Texas), and work campaigns to hopefully change who holds power.

I’m also dismayed by the SCOTUS ruling and feel disheartened about the politics in the US right now. It feels kinda hopeless right now, but I hope things will get better this November.
I also hate the heat. It feels so oppressive. I wish spring and fall weather lasted longer.

I need to read the latest Chambers. And I’ve enjoyed Ellery Adams in the past as well. I still need to start Strange New Worlds…

What a great find with the annotated book! I’m like you, I do not tolerate the heat well at all. If I’m out in it for any length of time I get fatigued and lightheaded. Wish I could skip summer this year. LOL

I can’t remember if I ever read that McCaffrey cat book. Even if I have, it’s been so long that I’m probably due for a re-read.

You got so many wonderful books! I really need to pick up the more recent Heather Graham books. They’re such fabulous escapist reading. I will keep my expectations low when I get to Losing Ground by Catherine Aird. I’ve really enjoyed her books by far but not every book can be a winner. I hope you are having a wonderful week.
