April 26, 2026 Sunday Post 3

The Sunday Post is hosted by the wonderful Kimberly, the Caffeinated Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news, recap the past week, take a look ahead, and showcase our new treasures—I mean books!

This week I’m also participating in The Sunday Salon hosted by Deb at Readerbuzz, and Stacking the Shelves hosted by Marlene at Reading Reality.

The Past Week

In real life: My dad did indeed have a mini-stroke, but he seems to be doing OK, other than the cognitive issues we were already noticing. He’s in a rehab center for a week or so, to try to get some strength back after 4 or 5 days in a hospital bed while they ran various tests.

We have been working on the house, and so have the contractors. The exterior structure is looking much better, and hopefully they fixed the slow leak in the basement. (We won’t know for sure until the next rain.) Weather permitting, this coming week they will do some landscaping, paint the remainder of the foundation walls, and fix and paint the (wooden) garage door. And a tree guy is coming Wednesday to take out some dead and dying trees before any more of them fall into the road.

Meanwhile, I’ve been going through clothes for donation, cataloguing books so I can pack them away, boxing up some games and yet more Christmas decorations, and interfacing with the various contractors. We also did a lot of thinking, researching, and asking questions in regard to our retirement finances, especially with the potential for an oil-shock recession looming.

Between Dad and [gestures] everything else, my anxiety was high earlier in the week, but it’s down to a manageable level again…for now.

3 Good Things:

  1. Dad is getting the care he needs.
  2. The house looks better already!
  3. Mr. Bookwyrm washed the windows and window sills (which really needed it!) and got the screens re-screened.
  4. I’m making progress on the books: 861 catalogued, up from 749 last Sunday.

What I’ve Been Reading/Watching

Reading: I finished The Ship Who Dared (Mercedes Lackey & Veronica Giguere). I’m currently reading/listening to This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me (Ilona Andrews), alternating between Kindle and audiobook. I’m also reading Sea of Charms (Sarah Beth Durst; ARC.)

Listening to: I finished Straight by Dick Francis, a reread (but first time listening.) And as I mentioned above, I’m listening to This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me by Ilona Andrews. I need to find another reread to listen to, because I can’t concentrate well on my audiobook when I’m packing boxes or cataloguing books.

Watching: A NOVA episode on the Artemis space program, including the recent launch and return of Artemis II. And The Late Night with Stephen Colbert.

Playing: I squeezed in a short game or two of Wingspan each day on my phone app, plus an occasional NYT game: Wordle, Connections, Strands, Spelling Bee, or Sudoku.

Purchased or Free

Print: The Loud Halo. When I was in my early 20s, I took a solo vacation to the Scottish Highlands. While on the isle of Skye, I bought 6 of Lillian Beckwith’s semi-autobiographical comic novels about croft life on a Hebridean island, based on her experiences living on the isle of Soay. Alas, the shop must not have had this one. When I was cataloguing this series early in the week, I decided to complete the set, and found a copy in good condition on AbeBooks. (What’s more, I found a copy in the US, which was rather a surprise as it was never published here.)

Kindle: PREORDER RELEASED: Duchess in Diamonds. ON SALE: The Starseekers; Den of Wolves; Tamsin; The Lost

Ten Years Ago I Was Reading…

I saw this idea on Lisa Loves Literature, who got it from Musings of a Bookish Kitty (who I also follow.) I thought I would give it a try! I published this reviews 10 years ago between April 20 and April 26, 2016.

Stay kind, hopeful, and steadfast… and may your books bring you joy this week!

All this home maintenance and repair is a huge project and I’m impressed with your work. My windows are in good shape since I just got them but the other ones I’ve had for 3 years could use some cleaning. Den of Wolves was amazing.

We are about to do a major upgrade on our house – the years while I was ill, it became cluttered, untidy and rather shabby. We’re hoping to turn it around over the coming summer, as I LOATHE doing that sort of stuff during the winter. Best of luck and I hope your father responds well to the care he’s receiving. Have a good week, Lark.

I’m a bit late to this post, so I’m glad to have seen your more recent update that your dad is doing better enough that he’s back home.

I know what you mean about finding an audiobook that you can multitask while listening. Not all books work for multitasking.
