Book News
- The Caldecott, Newbery, Coretta Scott King, Printz, Alex, and other children’s and YA book award winners for 2016 were announced Monday. The Newbery went to a picture book this year: Last Stop on Market Street by Matt de la Pena, illustrated by Christian Robinson. The Caldecott, an award specifically for picture books, went to Finding Winnie: The True Story of the World’s Most Famous Bear (written by Lindsay Mattick; illus. by Sophie Blackall.) Laura Ruby’s Bone Gap won the Printz Award. (American Library Association)
- A petition was launched to name new element ‘Octarine’ in honor of Terry Pratchett. Octarine is the color of magic, the 8th element in the Discworld spectrum. You can sign the petition here.
- The most checked-out book at the UN library is a bit awkward (The Short List). I’ll say.

Literary Losses
Alan Rickman, the talented and beloved actor who played literary roles from Tybalt to Col. Brandon to Professor Snape, died Thursday of cancer at the age of 69.
