July 9, 2023 Sunday Post 5

The Sunday Post is hosted by the wonderful Kimberly, the Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news, recap the past week, take a look ahead, and showcase our new treasures—I mean books!

This week I’m also participating in The Sunday Salon hosted by Deb at Readerbuzz, and Stacking the Shelves hosted by Marlene at Reading Reality.

Last Week

In real life: I finally have a break between indexes! I plan to do some spinning, some writing, some reading, some blogging, and some long-overdue housework. And maybe a jigsaw puzzle or two.

This weekend is the MAFA (MidAtlantic Fiber Association) Virtual Mini-Conference. I missed the entire first day (yesterday) because I was finishing an index, and once it was done, I was done… as in, done in, exhausted. But all three of my classes from yesterday should have been recorded, so I will be able to watch and learn during the coming weeks.

I have one more class this afternoon, on spinning art yarn with eco-friendly ingredients (reclaimed and recycled materials, as well as plant fibers and natural animal fibers, especially those that might otherwise go to waste.) I saw a short lecture version of this class during lockdown, but I’m hoping for more hands-on work. I have been saving up yarn and thread scraps and spinning waste, I have some sari silk waste (threads left over after the sari lengths were spun), and I have a bin full of mixed bits of cleaned fleece that were used to pad my travel wheel when it was shipped to me, plus plenty of commercially-prepared fiber.

Tour de Fleece: Even with all the indexing work, I managed to spin almost every day. I haven’t managed to take photos every day, though, so you’ll have to wait until later in the week for a spinning update.

Writing accountability: Now that I’m not working so much, I plan to get back to writing this month. My writing goal for July is simply to spend at least 15 minutes a day writing fiction. (Blog posts don’t count toward that goal.)

Looking Ahead

  • Tricked, by Kevin Hearne – review, tentative

What I’ve Been Reading/Watching

Reading: I am currently reading Claws and Contrivances by Stephanie Burgis (an ARC from the author.) I went on a rereading binge, plowing through the first five and a half books in Robin D. Owens’s “Celta’s Heartmates” series: Heart Mate, Heart Thief, Heart Duel, Heart Choice, Heart Quest, and (currently reading) Heart Dance. Can you tell I’m having insomnia again? Most of those were read after midnight, or during lunch breaks.

Listening to: I finished Trapped, by Kevin Hearne (Iron Druid Chronicles #5.) This week, I’ll start Hunted, the sixth book in the series. And I’m continuing with the Writing Excuses podcast. I’m now in Season 5. I’m looking forward to Season 6, when Mary Robinette Kowal finally joins the podcast as a host. No offense to the original hosts, but they are all white men, which means there’s a noticeable lack of diversity…and there has been the occasional sexist assumption as well. (I cut them some slack; these episodes are over 10 years old. Since they were made, I think a lot of people have become more aware of the need for and joys of hearing from people with wider variety of experiences, opinions, and worldviews.)

Playing (occasionally): Wordle, the NYT Spelling Bee, and Pokemon Go.

Watching: A few episodes of Richard Attenborough’s Our Planet, because I could stop mid-episode and get back to work.

Sounds like a very busy week! Though good for you for spinning daily regardless. I haven’t spun anything at all in some time now, and I miss it. (Though I really want to get a new wheel before spinning much else… and I’m nearly ready to make that purchase. So hopefully soon!)

I’m so glad you managed to get in Tour De Fleece even with the busy index work and hope for you to have more balance. I missed you yesterday and look forward to hearing your thoughts on future books hopefully. It’ll be great to see some of your spinning if you get a chance to post some photos.

Glad indexing has calmed down a bit. We had a conversation the other day about dog hair and apparently there are people who spin it in yarn! I hope you’re having a wonderful week!
