The Past Week
In real life: Things on the paperwork/financial front have calmed down a bit, so I was able to get a little more reading done this week. On Tuesday, my dad came down with a cold. He had chills and fever, plus congestion. We had the nurse come out to check on him on Wednesday. He tested negative for flu and Covid, and by Wednesday evening, he seemed to be over the worst of it and feeling better.
We flew home yesterday. While we didn’t accomplish everything I wanted to, we are leaving my dad and stepmom in a better situation than when I arrived. We’ll just have to see how things go from here.
4 Good Things:
- We took my dad and stepmom out to Olive Garden to celebrate his birthday (a little after the fact.)
- Mr. Bookwyrm continues to be my rock.
- I got some reading time in this week. In fact, I went from being 5 books behind schedule for my Goodreads challenge, to only 2 books behind.
- We’re home! I’m very grateful to be back in my own bed, and looking forward to sleeping better.

What I’ve Been Reading/Watching
Reading: I finished rereading The Fossil Door by Celia Lake, and went on to read Three Tales of Gabe & Rathna, a collection of three related stories. I also finished reading Witches of Dubious Origin (Jenn McKinlay), which was quite fun, then reread Old as the Hills (Celia Lake), which features Gabe and Rathna, the main characters in The Fossil Door, some 17 years later in the early years of World War II. I followed that with the direct sequel, Upon a Summer’s Day. After that, I read Enter the Nightmare (Jayne Castle; ARC), which was quite fun. On the plane yesterday, I started Agnes Aubert’s Mystical Cat Shelter (Heather Fawcett; ARC.)
Watching: Antiques Roadshow; various news programs; Riverdance 25th Anniversary
Playing: Wingspan (phone app), Pokémon Go, and an occasional game of Wordle, Connections, Strands, Spelling Bee, or Sudoku (all from the NYT.)

It was difficult at times, but it was indeed good to have this time with them. Dad’s getting a bit forgetful, but not about the people he loves. They both expressed a lot of love and appreciation for us being there and helping out so much. I hope they’ll do OK now that we’re gone. These next few months/years are going to be tough for them, as their mobility and physical abilities decline (and possibly their cognitive abilities as well.)

There is nothing quite like being home especially after a decent length of time away. I’m glad you made progress with your dad’s stuff and that he is feeling better. I hope you have a nice peaceful week with lots of reading time.

It’s tough to have aging parents! My husband’s parents are declining rapidly. His mother has Parkinson’s and just fell and broke her shoulder two days ago. I think we’ll have to travel down there and stay to help for a while. It’s nice that you left your parents in a good place. How was your flight home? I’ve heard the airports are kind of a mess with the shutdowns. we’re scheduled to travel to Texas later this month and I’m a little worried. Yay for being home and in your own bed again!
