March 22, 2026 Sunday Post 2

The Sunday Post is hosted by the wonderful Kimberly, the Caffeinated Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news, recap the past week, take a look ahead, and showcase our new treasures—I mean books!

This week I’m also participating in The Sunday Salon hosted by Deb at Readerbuzz, and Stacking the Shelves hosted by Marlene at Reading Reality.

The Past Week

In real life: We met with a contractor last weekend to discuss the things we need to do on the house. The good news is, we don’t need foundation work. The bad news is, the porch needs more work than we thought. We got estimates from the contractor for all the work we need done (ouch!) and from the guy who built our deck a few years ago for the porch work. We also rented a storage unit, played around with a mortgage calculator, and worked out a system for cataloging what is stored in which boxes so we can start packing some of our stuff. Plus, I have been making lists right and left: things we need to do to the house, things the contractor needs to do, things we need to to on the financial and legal fronts… it’s a lot to do and a lot to keep track of.

On the blog: I finally got my challenge page set up to track my 2026 challenges!

Good Things:

  1. I am finding it, if not exactly easy, at least a bit more possible to let go of more of my books. (I would not previously have said that was a Good Thing, but since I need to downsize from around 19-20 bookcases to around half of that, it’s good that I’m able to let some of them go with only mild regret.)
  2. Cheerful thought: At least my Kindlebooks don’t take up any space!
  3. Renovating the porch will cost less than we thought, and it will significantly improve the curb appeal of the house.
  4. I’m thankful that the top third of a tall tree, which broke off and crashed down during Tuesday’s storms and high winds, did not come down on the house or cars. It fell safely into the street, and hit no one. And Mr. Bookwyrm and a passing driver were able to move it out of the road before any other cars came along.

What I’ve Been Reading/Watching

Reading: I finished rereading Three Graces by Celia Lake; it’s a historical fantasy novella set in Albion (magical Britain) after WWII. I followed that up with The Changing Door (no Goodreads link available), a collection of “extra” scenes for two books in the same series: Old as the Hills and Upon a Summer’s Day (both of which I had read the previous week.) After that, I read The Quiet Side, a novella by Casey Blair. I continued reading The Thursday Murder Club and Agnes Aubert’s Mystical Cat Shelter (Heather Fawcett; ARC), and I also started The Quiet Light (Casey Blair), the first book in the Sage’s Sanctuary series for which The Quiet Side was the prequel.

Listening to: I finished The Fabric of Civilization: How Textiles Made the World (Virginia Postrel), a fascinating and well-written history of, well, how textiles made the world. Then I started A Little Too Familiar by Lish McBride. It’s my second or third reading, but my first time on audio, and I’m enjoying it very much.

Watching: Star Trek: The Next Generation, Season 7 (a rewatch); The Late Night with Stephen Colbert

Playing: Wingspan (phone app), Winter Burrow (Steam), and occasionally one or more NYT games: Wordle, Connections, Strands, Spelling Bee, and Sudoku.

Purchased or Free

Kindle: Cinder House; The Last Labyrinth (Prime First Reads pick); Twelfth Night Sorcery; Tales From the Perilous Realm; Too Many Magicians; These Violet Delights; The Quiet Light

Ten Years Ago I Was Reading…

I saw this idea on Lisa Loves Literature, who got it from Musings of a Bookish Kitty (who I also follow.) I thought I would give it a try! I published these reviews 10 years ago, between March 16 and March 22, 2016.

Stay kind, hopeful, and steadfast… and may your books bring you joy this week!

  1. Anne - Books of My Heart

You certainly are busy with the getting ready to sell and move. You did a big set of projects last year so I thought maybe you would relax for a year. It doesn’t seem to work like that, for me either. I just haven’t bought print books much in the last 10 years, all digital audiobooks and books. Easier to store.

Did you find that reading The Quiet Side before The Quiet Light worked okay, or do they need to be read in the other order? I’ve been curious about those, but haven’t looked into reading order yet.

Best of luck with the house stuff! I’m glad you’ve come to a good place with downsizing your physical books. On the one hand I cling to my paper copies of books — but on the other, I have only a few bookshelves (with no plans to get more), and so I’m already in the habit of letting go of the physical books that don’t mean as much to me when a new special copy comes along.
