October 20, 2024 Sunday Post 7

The Sunday Post is hosted by the wonderful Kimberly, the Caffeinated Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news, recap the past week, take a look ahead, and showcase our new treasures—I mean books!

This week I’m also participating in The Sunday Salon hosted by Deb at Readerbuzz, and Stacking the Shelves hosted by Marlene at Reading Reality.

The Past Week

In real life: I got home Wednesday night after a long day of travel. I was sad to leave Robin and my parents and sister and her family, but I’m glad to be home. I’ve missed my husband! I had two doctor’s appointments on Thursday. On Friday, I went back into town for a battery of blood tests. I have another yearly checkup with another specialist this coming week, and I need to schedule my mammogram and a couple of ultrasounds. Most of this is either routine yearly checks, or things that are currently fine but we’re keeping an eye on.

As soon as I got home, I wanted to start unpacking the stuff we stored in the basement during the renovations, but first I had to unpack from my trip. That in itself required moving our dressers back into place, which required putting felt on the feet… it’s like one of those square puzzles where you have to move one piece at a time, so you can move another one, so you can move a third piece. Oh, well, it will all get done eventually!

Looking Ahead

What I’ve Been Reading/Watching (since 7/14/2024)

Reading: I finished rereading Dreaming Spies, book #13 in Laurie R. King’s historical mystery series starring Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes. I reread The Arrangement and The Escape and started Only Enchanting, books #2–4 of Mary Balgoh’s Survivor’s Club historical romance series, all three of which I have reviewed before (in 2013 and 2014.) And I continued reading The Wedding Witch by Erin Sterling (ARC). I also read a few stories from Buried Deep and Other Stories, Naomi Novik’s new short story collection (ARC.)

Watching: Before I left New Mexico, Robin and I watched My Neighbor Totoro, which I had never seen. We also started Have His Carcase, a BBC adaptation of the Dorothy Sayers novel, which is part of their Lord Peter Wimsey series; I will be finishing it at home.

Playing: Before I left New Mexico, I played Wingspan and Azul at my sister’s house. I played Pokemon Go and my usual NYT word games: Wordle, Connections, Strands, and the Spelling Bee.

Yay for getting home safe and sound. I hope all the doctors’ appointments go smoothly. I really need to keep reading the Balogh series. I read the first one earlier this year and really loved it. I hope you’re having a wonderful week!

We love My Neighbor Totoro! I’m looking forward to watching another Studio Ghibli favorite again soon: Mr. Wyrm and I always watch Spirited Away along with the first good rain of the year (well, the first good rain when we’re home and not busy). Soon, I hope!

And welcome home! I completely understand the mixed feelings on coming home after a long time away like that.
