The Make Me Read It Read-A-Thon is hosted by Ely @ Tea and Titles and Val @ The Innocent Smiley and runs July 9-16, 2016
I’m joining the Make Me Read It Read-A-Thon!
Basically, this is a readathon where you, gentle reader, get to choose what I will read.
So how does this work?
Look at the books you own, either physical, e-book or ones you’ve borrowed from the library and pick out a few you really want to read, or feel like you should read. It’s up to you how many you pick, personally I’d pick a few more than you expect to be able to read in a week. Example: if you think you’ll only read two, pick out five books or if you think you can read seven, pick out ten.
Make a list of these books on your blog, or make a video, or a Goodreads shelf or post a picture on Instagram—whatever is easiest for you. Then get friends, other bloggers/booktubers etc. to vote on which books you HAVE to read.
When the read-a-thon comes along, you read the books in the order of most votes. For example, if one book gets 10 votes—you read that first, then the one that got 7 and so on. If there’s a tie, then it’s your preference. The goal is to read as many as possible.
The read-a-thon will take place from the 9th to the 16th of July in your timezone. You can start anytime you want on the 9th, so just fit it around whatever works for you! As for the voting, that’s up to you too! Just remember to link your post/photo/video/tweet in the linky at the end of this post so everyone can vote on it!
Use the hashtag #MakeMeRead on Twitter and Instagram.
I’ve decided to focus on fantasy novels, because I haven’t been reading enough of them recently. Here are the options. All are books I own, either in print or ebook format, but haven’t read yet. (Title links go to Goodreads.)
- The Slow Regard of Silent Things by Patrick Rothfuss (companion story to the Kingkiller Chronicle by an amazing author)
- Unbound by Jim C. Hines (third in the Magic Ex Libris quartet, which I love)
- Shades of Milk and Honey by Mary Robinette Kowal (a series I’ve been meaning to start for several years now)
- A Darker Shade of Magic by V. E. Schwab (Robin really wants me to read this)
- A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas (because I really like Beauty & the Beast and Tamlin retellings, and this is both)
- The Thief by Megan Whalen Turner (because I hear it’s awesome)
So now it’s time to vote!
Check back to see which book I’ll be reading first. And wish me luck!
Voting Results
The votes are in! Here’s what I’ll be reading. I’ll start with the first book, and see how far I get — especially since I have a lot of work to do this week, which I was not expecting when I signed up. Best laid plans, and all that.
- A Darker Shade of Magic
- A Court of Thorns and Roses
- Shades of Milk and Honey
- Unbound
- The Slow Regard of Silent Things
- The Thief
Ely @ Tea & Titles
I’ve only read A Darker Shade of Magic so I had to go with that one! Thank you so much for joining in!

That one’s getting most of the love so far! Thank you for hosting, and for coming by to vote!
Annika @ Hiding Books
I want you to read ADSOM, really really badly! But also Silent Regard. It’s very different from Kingkiller but I enjoyed reading about Auri anyway!
I hope you have fun with the readathon, and I’m so glad you’re taking part too 🙂

So far, it looks like ADSOM is winning! Thank you again for pointing me to the readathon.
Lianne @ eclectictales.com
From your list I only read Shades of Milk and Honey, which I enjoyed, so I voted for that! 😀 (I do have ADSOM on my TBR pile but I don’t think I’ll be getting around to it anytime soon xD) Happy reading with whichever book comes on top 😀

Thank you for voting! I really want to get to that book. I’m hoping it will get enough votes that I “have” to read it during the readathon!
Becca @ The Bookkeeper's Apprentice
Thanks so much for voting and following my blog! I haven’t read any of these books yet, but I voted for A Court of Thorns and Roses because I really like Beauty and the Beast too 🙂
Lark_Bookwyrm
It seems to getting a fair bit of love; right now it’s coming in second behind A Darker Shade of Magic, so chances are it will get read that week. 🙂
Sanovia @ Creatyvebooks
A Darker Shade of Magic for $500 Alex. That’s the only one I read. That and ACOTAR but ADSOM is a bit better in my opinion.
This sounds like a awesome idea. I wish I could join but I know I will not stick to the book chosen for me lol.
Lark_Bookwyrm
Thanks for voting! Sticking to the chosen book(s) may be a challenge for me, too, because I’m something of a mood reader. But I tried to choose books that I’ve really wanted to read for a while. And I’m used to reading books I “have” to read because of all the review copies I get.
Chloo
I was debating on picking between unbound and the thief so I just went with my gut instinct and chose Unbound.
I have only heard of ACOTAR as you know its on my poll for this readathon but decided against it as I’d like to see a book I don’t know being read and reviewed 🙂
Lark_Bookwyrm
Good choice – I love that series and really want to read Unbound! So far, though, it’s number 4 in the poll, so I don’t know if I’ll get to it during the readathon; it depends on how much time I have and how fast the other books go.
Katherine @ I Wish I Lived in a Library
This challenge is so much fun! I love seeing what everyone’s choices are and what books get the most votes. I hope you love whichever one whens. What a good way to make yourself read more fantasy books.

Originally I thought I’d use it to work on ARCs, but I’m really craving fantasy and there are so many on my list that I both want to read, and already own. So it’s going to be a week of wallowing in other worlds.
Lauren @ SERIESous Book Reviews
It was a tough choice for me between A Darker Shade of Magic and A Court of Thorns and Roses–but ADSOM won out for me. It was a fave of mine last year so I hope you enjoy it 🙂
Good luck with your challenge!

It’s well ahead of all the other contenders at this point, so I guess I’ll be reading it first! Thanks for voting!
Rita @ View From My Books
I voted for A Court of Thorns and Roses because I read this and really enjoyed it, and I’m not a diehard fantasy fan. I intend to also read book 2 soon. I’m curious about A Darker Shade of Magic now, though. Good luck!
Lark_Bookwyrm
Thank you, Rita! It’s good to know you enjoyed it, particularly as someone who doesn’t read a lot of fantasy.
Morgan
That was a really tough choice between ADSOM and ACOTAR. But ADSOM absolutely blew me away, and I’m reading the sequel now, so I picked that. There are some really great choices there! 😀
Lark_Bookwyrm
Thank you for voting, Morgan! I tried to pick books that I’d be happy to read, no matter which ones got the most votes.
Angie@Angela's Anxious Life
This looks like a fun readathon and I think the idea of having people vote on the books you read is neat!

Thanks for voting, Angie! It’s my first time doing this readathon, but I think it’s going to be fun.
Shaunesay
I went with Shades of Milk and Honey because I’m interested in that one too. That author will be at MidAmericon that I’m going to, so I hope to get something read by her before I go!
Lark_Bookwyrm
Thanks for voting, Shaunesay! I really want to read that one, but it’s polling third at the moment, so it will depend on how fast I get through the other books.
Heather
I ended up voting for ADSOM for you as well! Thanks for voting on mine!
Lark_Bookwyrm
No problem, and thanks for coming to vote!
Kayla
Definitely voted for Darker Shade of Magic. I’ve heard nothing, but good things about it! Hope you have fun with readathon!

As I said, my daughter loved it. She’s pretty happy that it’s polling highest right now. 🙂

Sorry it’s taken me so long to reply — it’s been a busy month! I’ve started ADSOM, and while I’m only about 14% in so far, it’s very good!
Kelsey
It was so hard to vote, but I went with A Darker Shade of Magic! A court of Thorns and Roses was really good too though.
Lark_Bookwyrm
Well, those two ended up #1 and #2, so I may be able to read both this week!
Got My Book
I voted for Unbound, since you already like that series. I didn’t love either SoM&H or ACoTaR

I hope so! My daughter Robin liked it, and hey — it’s based on both Beauty and the Beast and Tam Lin, so those are major points in its favor already!

I voted for the only one I read but I really loved it! 🙂
I’ll be joining this readathon, too! 🙂
