December 17, 2023 Sunday Post 5

The Sunday Post is hosted by the wonderful Kimberly, the Caffeinated Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news, recap the past week, take a look ahead, and showcase our new treasures—I mean books!

This week I’m also participating in The Sunday Salon hosted by Deb at Readerbuzz, and Stacking the Shelves hosted by Marlene at Reading Reality.

The Past Two Weeks

I can’t believe Christmas is only a week away! I’m still finishing up the last of my Christmas shopping, but what’s left is mostly digital (audiobooks and ebooks.)

Oops: Last week’s Sunday Post didn’t post on time. We were on the road, and I thought I had scheduled it, but apparently I had forgotten to click the “Schedule” button. I didn’t discover my mistake until Wednesday. So I decided just to combine last Sunday’s completed post with today’s.

Two weeks ago: I turned in my latest index project. Apparently, a couple of illustrations will be moving to different pages, which will cause the text of the book to reflow in one or two chapters. So I will have some changes to make to the index once those are done. But other than that, I’m now on vacation until January! With work out of the way, I focused on getting ready for our trip: doing laundry, packing, and running errands. I also did a little Christmas shopping, both online and in local shops. And I took care of a couple of medical tests. (Nothing to worry about.) At the end of the week, we drove to New Mexico, picked up Robin, and drove to Utah, arriving late Monday night.

The past week: We had a good visit with my dad and stepmom, and got to see three of my cousins as well. I also spent some time Christmas shopping online, cooking meals for my dad and stepmom, and spinning. We left this morning for New Mexico, where we will spend the holidays with Robin (and our grandkitties!), my mom and stepdad, and my sister and her family.

The Backlist Reader Challenge

The sign-up post is live for The Backlist Reader Challenge 2024! If you’re looking for a reading challenge to help you tackle all those books that have been languishing on your TBR pile (or list) forever, check out The Backlist Reader Challenge 2024.

What I’ve Been Reading/Watching

Reading: Between finishing up the index, packing, spending 5 days on the road (not all at once), and spending time with family, my available reading time took a significant hit over the last two weeks.

I finished The Curse of Penryth Hall (Jess Armstrong; ARC.) I really liked the story and the atmosphere, and I found several of the characters compelling (particularly the first-person POV heroine), but the author’s over-use of sentence fragments drove me up the wall. (It has to be a deliberate style choice; there are just too many of them to have slipped past a copy-editor.) Then I reread one of my all-time favorite comfort books, Aunt Dimity’s Death. After that, I read Celia Lake’s most recent release, Three Graces.

Listening to: We listened to Phasers on Stun as as we drove across the country. (We haven’t finished it yet.) Once Robin joined us, we also listened to several podcasts, including Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me and The Soundtrack Show; from the latter, we listened to two episodes about the soundtrack for Star Trek (the original series.)

Playing: Wordle, Connections, and the NYT Spelling Bee, and Pokémon Go.
