The Sunday Post is hosted by the wonderful Kimberly, the Caffeinated Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news, recap the past week, take a look ahead, and showcase our new treasures—I mean books!

This week I’m also participating in The Sunday Salon hosted by Deb at Readerbuzz, and Stacking the Shelves hosted by Marlene at Reading Reality.
The Past Week
In real life: I had my well-woman checkup and a dental cleaning this week. I edited and published the newsletter for my fiber-arts guild. Mr. Bookwyrm and I worked on gathering materials on our finances, so we can talk with a retirement planner this week. My new 2025-2026 family wall calendar arrived, so I filled out all the birthdays and known appointments for the next 15 months. I wet-blocked the asymmetrical scarf I knit for the fiber guild knit-along, and tied off the scarf I wove in August and September. On Saturday, I went to the monthly fiber guild meeting, and learned the first steps of nålbinding. I’m not sure I will get into it seriously, but it was interesting! Other than that, I worked on getting the house ready for Robin’s visit next week.
I’m trying to stay upbeat, but the government shutdown is injecting a lot of uncertainty into our lives. A lot of people we know work for the federal government or the armed services, either directly or indirectly, including Mr. Bookwyrm.
5 Good Things:
- Robin is coming for a visit this week!
- After several unseasonably warm days, the weather has cooled off, and we’re seeing highs in the mid-60s to low 70s. It’s still a little warmer than I prefer for mid-October, but it’s very pleasant.
- I was approved for an ARC I requested, and received a publisher invitation for another book I really want to read, but hadn’t yet requested.
- The fiber guild meeting was fun, and a good opportunity to get together with some friends.
- I am enjoying using my fountain pens more frequently, not only for correspondence but for my planner/diary… so much so that I ordered another of the Lamy Safari pens. Having multiple pens means I can use different color inks without having to empty and clean a pen (and waste some of the ink in the process.)

What I’ve Been Reading/Watching

Reading: I didn’t get much reading done this week. I DNF’d Christmas with the Queen (Hazel Gaynor & Heather Webb; a library book)—at least for now. There’s nothing wrong with it; it just wasn’t the right mood for me right now. I continued reading The Keeper of Magical Things (Julie Leong; ARC), and started In Other Lands by Sara Rees Brennan, one of the books in my Robin’s Recs challenge. I also started rereading Exile’s Song by Marion Zimmer Bradley and Adrienne Martine-Barnes (uncredited), but I’m not sure it’s the right mood at the moment, either.
Listening to: I finished Murder Most Royal by SJ Bennett, and read Sweep of the Heart by Ilona Andrews for the Edge/Innkeeper series read-along.
Watching: Star Trek: The Next Generation, season 5; A Discovery of Witches, season 3; and NOVA‘s “Human” miniseries.
Playing: Wingspan on my phone and on Steam. Tiny Bookshop on Steam. And my usuals: Wordle, Connections, Strands, Spelling Bee, and Sudoku (all from the NYT), an occasional game of Clues by Sam, and Pokemon Go.

Ten Years Ago I Was Reading…
I saw this idea on Lisa Loves Literature, who got it from Musings of a Bookish Kitty (who I also follow.) I thought I would give it a try! These are the reviews I published 10 years ago between Oct. 1 and Oct. 12.

Anne - Books of My Heart
You had a very productive week. The world is a grim place right now. I’d say disappointing but this is exactly what I expected from this regime.

Sounds like a productive week. 😀

Thank you! I didn’t get everything accomplished that I wanted to, but I’m pleased with what I have done so far.

Good luck with your knitting projects! I also know a lot of people who work for the federal government. I really hope the shutdown doesn’t last much longer.

You’re getting so much accomplished, Lark. Nice list of books, too. Hoping for an end to the shutdown soon.

Dentist and doctor in the same week? Both of those appointments always make me feel like I need to go back to bed afterwards even when there isn’t anything wrong! Sounds like you were productive though. Yay for a Robin visit! I understand about Christmas with the Queen. Sometimes it just isn’t the right time for a book. I’m struggling with the first Emily Wilde right now and I suspect its mood related. I hope you have a good week!

You accomplished a lot this week! Enjoy your books and I hope this coming week is a good one for you!

A Whisper of Cardamom sounds like a great cookbook! If you try any of the recipes that you particularly like, please let us know!

Sounds like you had a busy week. I always dislike havign to go for doctor and dental appointments, but I know it’s important to get those done. And I am sorry to hear about the uncertainty the government shutdown caused. That fiber guild meeting sounds fun. And it’s always exciting when you get approved for an ARC you really want. I pre-ordered my copy of The Keep of Magical Things, I really enjoyed the author’s previous book. A Whisper of Cardamon sounds interesting too. And I’ve read Must Love Moss and Moonshine recently.

I’m sending good thoughts for an end to the government shutdown. Ugh.
I love it that you are using your fountain pen more often, and that you ordered an additional pen. I love using fountain pens.
