The Sunday Post is hosted by the wonderful Kimberly, the Caffeinated Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news, recap the past week, take a look ahead, and showcase our new treasures—I mean books!

This week I’m also participating in The Sunday Salon hosted by Deb at Readerbuzz, and Stacking the Shelves hosted by Marlene at Reading Reality.
The Past Week
In real life: Mr. Bookwyrm and I continued our downsizing assault on the basement. I went through clothes I was saving for “when I lose 20 lbs.” I have now reached that goal (and hope to continue), so I’m delighted to start wearing some things I haven’t worn in 5 years or more. We donated sheets and blankets from our old double bed to the local church-run thrift store, took some worn-out twin blankets to the animal shelter, and sent Robin’s old crib bedding to our niece for her new baby. We unearthed 5 boxes of books I had already pruned to take to the used bookstore, and took one of them to the store already. What the bookstore didn’t take went straight to the Friends of the Library booksale. And Mr. Bookwyrm is scanning old files; we’ll keep some necessary paperwork, but a lot of it can be shredded or recycled once it’s scanned.
In between all that, on Tuesday we got our flu shots and met with a retirement planner. Wednesday, I prepped for and attended a Board meeting for my professional association. I had some medical tests Thursday, and everything was pretty much fine. All in all, it’s been a busy week even without an indexing job!
5 Good Things:
- Our retirement plans are beginning to take shape.
- We’re making progress on downsizing/decluttering.
- I’m finding it somewhat easier to let go of things than I used to.
- I’m loving the cooler weather, and the fall colors.
- I have started my Christmas knitting and shopping.

Wow, great job with the downsizing. I did that last winter, and it was exhausting.

You’re amazing at the downsizing and decluttering. I need to do more. I have that depression mindset of my parents which is to save things I might need.

I do, too. It’s very hard to let go of things, particularly if I’m sentimental about them. But I am adding “Would we really move this 1900 miles across the country?” and “Do we want Robin to have to deal with this when I’m gone?” to my list of triage questions as I sort. The other questions I ask myself are “Do we use it?”, “Do we need it?”, “Does it still bring me joy?”, and “Would a digital copy or a photo be enough?” We’re still going to have plenty of stuff to move across the country, but asking those five questions is helping me whittle things down. And for things we don’t use very often, there’s also the question of “Could we borrow or rent one if we needed it?” (The answer to that, given that our family out there consists of three separate households, plus a close family friend, is often “Yes.”)
That said, we’re absolutely keeping family history photos, family heirlooms that we feel deeply attached to, my favorite books, and the like. And for the things we inherited from various parents and grandparents but don’t feel strongly about keeping, we’re asking other members of the family whether they want something before we sell it or give it away.
That said, the moving truck is still going to be pretty darn full, whenever we get to that point!
