April 19, 2026 Sunday Post 8

The Sunday Post is hosted by the wonderful Kimberly, the Caffeinated Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news, recap the past week, take a look ahead, and showcase our new treasures—I mean books!

This week I’m also participating in The Sunday Salon hosted by Deb at Readerbuzz, and Stacking the Shelves hosted by Marlene at Reading Reality.

The Past Week

In real life: A busy week! I paid my business taxes, voted in Virginia’s special election, went to the dentist, and had a doctor’s appointment. I catalogued a bunch more books, and took a few boxes of books and audiobook CDs to the used bookstore and the library booksale. We continued working on financial and legal matters, contracted to have some trees taken out, and set a date (Tuesday) to have some of the exterior work done on the house. I am low-key freaking out a lot of the time. There is so much to do, and an ever-shrinking window of time to do it in, assuming we want the get the house on the market by early summer.

My dad is in the hospital for a day or two, after what looks like a mini-stroke (TIA) yesterday morning. As of last night, he appears to be doing fine, but they want to run more tests. It is a reminder that my dad and stepmom’s health situations could change at any moment. I didn’t get a lot done on the house yesterday; when we heard he was going to the hospital, I started packing, and even after we got the “probably OK” message (and I could start unpacking), I was alternating between feeling weepy and shaky, and tried to escape my feelings by whatever the opposite of doomscrolling is. (Joyscrolling? Looking for positive posts, anyway. In retrospect, I should have just read a book.)

5 Good Things:

  1. It looks like Dad will be all right for now, thank goodness.
  2. I had a fantastic time at the fiber guild retreat last weekend.
  3. My sister and I had a “tea and games” session over the phone; we each made tea, chatted, and played an online game together. We have both been so busy that it has been weeks since we had time to chat.
  4. We sold several more of Robin’s old toys this week.
  5. I’m at 749 books catalogued so far, up from 628 on Monday. Progress!

What I’ve Been Reading/Watching

Reading: This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me (Ilona Andrews) on both Kindle and audiobook. I’m also reading  The Ship Who Dared (Mercedes Lackey & Veronica Giguere). Both books came out this month. And I started Spellbound by Murder (Stacie Ramey; ARC) for the COYER mystery readathon, though I didn’t get very far before the readathon ended last night.

Listening to: This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me by Ilona Andrews (alternating between listening and reading). I also started Straight by Dick Francis, a reread (but first time listening) for the COYER Mystery readathon running Aug. 12-18. Again, I didn’t finish Straight by the end of the readathon, but I am enjoying both audiobooks very much and hope to finish them in the next week or two.

Watching: The Brokenwood Mysteries, Season 12, Episodes 1 and 2. And The Late Night with Stephen Colbert—we’ll be sad when the show ends in May.

Playing: Wingspan (phone app), and the occasional NYT game: Wordle, Connections, Strands, Spelling Bee, or Sudoku.

Ten Years Ago I Was Reading…

I saw this idea on Lisa Loves Literature, who got it from Musings of a Bookish Kitty (who I also follow.) I thought I would give it a try! I published this reviews 10 years ago, on April 13.

Stay kind, hopeful, and steadfast… and may your books bring you joy this week!

glad your dad is fine now.
Wish I could take out my neighbors’ overhanging trees. so I could use my backyard without fear!

      Thank you.
It’s tough when the neighbors won’t deal with their trees. I mean, I love trees, and I hate taking them out, but the ones we’re planning to take out are dead, dying, or rotten, and they’re a real hazard. We lost another one last night; it fell into the street. We’re in a wooded development, so these aren’t trees we planted. They grew on their own, and they’re the grow-fast-and-die-young type, not the slow-growing hardwoods.

Getting on top of your books must be a mammoth task – I know that we ought to go through ours and have a big declutter. But right now, I can’t face it. So sorry to hear about your father’s sudden illness – it’s always horrible when elderly parents become poorly. I hope he recovers soon. In the meantime, here’s hoping the coming week is a kinder one:).

Thank you. The report today is that Dad is doing OK, though he’s not happy about needing to stay for more tests. Hopefully he can go home tonight.

I have pruned the books down by at least 13-15 boxes. I still have a lot to catalog, but I’ve made a big dent in it.

  3. Anne - Books of My Heart

I hope your dad recovers well. That is so much to do but I think you are doing well. Hopefully you get a good feeling from your accomplishments. The Readathon ends today, it’s not over until tonight.

Anne – Books of My Heart This is my Sunday Post

Dad seems to be doing better. And we’re making progress on the house. I’m trying not to panic too much. As for the Readathon, I won’t finish either book by tonight, but that’s OK.
