The Past Week

In real life: How is almost June already?! We are still packing up the stuff in the kitchen/dining room that we don’t need for immediate use. (To be fair, the dining end of the room had become a bit of a multipurpose space, rarely used for actual dining, so there was a lot in there. And also to be fair, I worked on some other stuff for part of the week.)

4 Good Things:

  1. You know that feeling when the perfect book comes along just when you need it? That was The Reimagining of Thornwood House for me last weekend: a book about moving, new beginnings, and finding a home and a place in your new community.
  2. I managed to get hold of someone at my dad’s insurance, so at least I know what steps to take next to try to get the necessary help covered.
  3. We got a good amount of rain this past week, which we badly needed. Most of our new plants are thriving as a result. (Alas, so are the weeds, but you can’t have everything.)
  4. On the blog, I updated my 2026 Reading Challenges page.

What I’ve Been Reading/Watching

Reading: I finished The Reimagining Of Thornwood House (Jayleigh Johnson; ARC), which I loved; it is easily among my top five books for the year so far. Then I started reading A Bitter Cut (Anna Lee Huber; ARC.) I also reread Apt to Be Suspicious (Celia Lake.)

Listening to: I finished Once Upon a Tome by Oliver Darkshire. It’s a memoir of his apprenticeship as an antiquarian bookseller at Sotheran’s in London, and he has a quirky sense of humor, so it’s right up my alley. Then I listened to A Nun in the Closet (Dorothy Gilman), a humorous mystery that, while dated, is still fun. After that, I started Copper Beach (Jayne Ann Krentz), which is a reread, but I haven’t listened to it before.

Watching: The Brokenwood Mysteries, Season 12, 5, and a few episodes of The Late Night Show with Stephen Colbert that we had missed in the last few weeks, including the final episode.
