March 8, 2020 Sunday Post 5

The Sunday Post is hosted by the wonderful Kimberly, the Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news, recap the past week, take a look ahead, and showcase our new treasures—I mean books!

Last Week

Yesterday, we went to Raptor Hill Falconry for a private “Raptor Experience,” and it was amazing! Jennifer, the owner, gave us a quick overview of the history of falconry and the care and feeding of the birds. Then she introduced us to Lily, a lanner falcon, before taking us outside to work with Lily, then a smaller male lanner. (Well, Jennifer worked with the birds, but we got to have them land on us multiple times.) Finally, she took us into one of the enclosures to meet Aurora, her Eurasian eagle-owl.

I’ve wanted to do something like this for years. I read My Side of the Mountain at a very impressionable age, and fell in love with Sam’s falcon, Frightful. Several experiences of seeing raptors in the wild fed my affinity and and respect for the birds. And the Tayledras bondbirds from Mercedes Lackey’s Valdemar books really solidified that interest. So I was over the moon when my husband gave me the raptor experience package for my birthday in 2018, and even more over the moon when we finally got to go. (We had to reschedule twice because I got sick or had an injured shoulder. This time, I was finally healthy. )

Rehearsals start today for the spring concert, so I may not be around much today. (And I ended up posting this late. I have got to fix whatever is keeping my scheduled posts from posting!)

What I’m Reading/Watching

Reading: This wasn’t a great reading week, at least in number of books. I did read one book I loved: Deanna Raybourn’s forthcoming Veronica Speedwell mystery, A Murderous Relation. I reread To Ride Pegasus by Anne McCaffrey, and I am currently rereading Pegasus in Flight. And I’m still slowly working my way through Decluttering at the Speed of Life (Dana K. White.) (Click titles for Goodreads or my review.)

Listening: I had been listening to Shades of Milk and Honey by Mary Robinette Kowal, but I haven’t listened to it in several weeks, so I think I should switch to something else.

Watching: Picard (season 1) and Warehouse 13 (season 3.) And Stephen Colbert and Trevor Noah.

I really enjoyed Lady Takes the Case and just listened to the first Mrs. Pollifax book and absolutely loved it. Such a crazy story but so fun. I saw the falcon pictures on Instagram and was amazed. Such beautiful creatures and it reminded me of the Dark Witch series by Nora Roberts. Have a great week!
