The Sunday Post is hosted by the wonderful Kimberly, the Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news, recap the past week, take a look ahead, and showcase our new treasures—I mean books!

This Week

Like most of the rest of the world, I am horrified and deeply saddened (but not surprised) by Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. My heart goes out to all Ukrainians. I honor their courage, and I pray for their safety, for peace, and for a free, independent Ukraine.

Since there’s little I can do to change the situation (except donate to refugee relief organizations, and pray), I am trying not to doomscroll too much, and to focus on the little joys and be thankful for them. I’m indexing an interesting book, which always makes work more enjoyable. I’m still spinning the beautiful red wool-alpaca-sparkly blend, and should be able to finish it up this week. I’m almost finished with a knitting project that I have been working on since last April. And huzzah!—case numbers are dropping here, as are hospitalizations. I’m still not planning to eat in a restaurant any time soon, or attend a play or movie in a packed theater. But I’m starting to think about getting together with a few friends (individually), beginning in March, and I’ve begun dreaming about browsing a bookstore (suitably masked, of course.)

What I’ve Been Reading/Watching

Reading: I finished All the Queen’s Men by S.J. Bennett (ARC), which I really enjoyed. I read two library books, The Becoming by Nora Roberts and The Silver Bullets of Annie Oakley by Mercedes Lackey. At least one of them can count toward the COYER readathon, I think, and both count toward the Library Love Challenge. And I’m right on schedule with my Goodreads challenge. Listening to: I finished Emperor Mage, and followed it up with The Realms of the Gods, the fourth and final book in the series.

Watching: Star Trek: Discovery S4 E9. We also finished season 5 of Foyle’s War (it’s only three episodes) and started season 6, and we watched another episode of Leverage (season 1.)

Print: I bought these beautiful Chiltern editions of The Secret Garden, Emma, and Mansfield Park on a 3-for-2 sale, using an Amazon gift card I had forgotten I had until I found it in my desk drawer. Now I have six Chiltern Classics to grace my shelves. (I already had Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, and Little Women.)

    I have stopped reading online news for awhile because it’s making me anxious that something of that magnitude is going on.

    How was the new Nora Roberts book? I’ve been very interested in it. And your collection of beautiful classic books, wow, a good idea. Under Lock and Skeleton Key just sounds like fun. Enjoy your week. I know we don’t read much of the same books but I really enjoy your blog– very relaxing.

      Sometimes you need to take a break from the news to protect your mental health. There are times I will just read the headlines, so I have some idea of what is happening without steeping myself in it. Right now, I am reading in more depth, but still trying to limit the amount of time I spend dwelling on it.

      There was a lot I loved about The Becoming, particularly Breen’s deep, supportive friendship with her BFF Marco. And I love that Roberts has given Marco a secondary romance in this book. It’s definitely book two of a trilogy, though, and I wish I didn’t have to wait for the third book.

    It’s nice to be able to start making plans again! I browsed a bookstore with my niece in January, and I really want to go back!

      Oh, that sounds lovely! There’s a used bookstore in our nearest small city, that should be relatively empty on a weekday morning. I’m planning to take them some books we are ready to let go of, and see if there’s anything I want to add to my collections.

    Yes I agree with everything you said. I do too much doom scrolling and have been worried for USA as well as Ukraine but right now they are the focus and I worry for them. I’m also with you on the limiting contact and masks. I actually did some knitting this week, showing my daughter how the pattern I wrote out for her for the scarf would work.

      I find knitting (or other crafting) is a great antidote to anxiety and doomscrolling! Have you thought about sharing your patterns on your blog, and/or on Ravelry? I’m interested to see what you have designed. As for worrying about the USA as well as Ukraine… yes, for a while now. But I doggedly try to cling to optimism nonetheless.

    It is hard not to doomscroll. I struggle between wanting to know what’s happening (and how the Ukrainian people are holding out) and realizing there’s not a lot I can do, except what I can (and pray as you point out).

    I need to get back to my Star Trek viewing as well, I appreciate your reminding me. 🙂

      I am experiencing the same struggle. I certainly don’t want to ignore what is happening, but I don’t want to send myself into a spiral of anxiety and fear, either. Figuring out what I can do to help makes me feel a little less helpless. So although I know there’s nothing I can do individually to stop what’s happening, I will be contacting my elected representatives to urge them to support Ukraine and maintain pressure on Russia, and I will be donating to help Ukrainian refugees.

      Where are you in your ST viewing? And have you checked out ST: Prodigy yet? We watched the first episode; I need to watch a few more before I decide whether to stick with it or not.

      It’s definitely hard to watch, and to read about. I hope it can be resolved soon, without escalating into a wider conflict and without compromising Ukraine’s independence.

      ST:Discovery is definitely worth watching. I hope you enjoy it!

      The Chiltern Classics Editions are really gorgeous. There are a lot more titles, some with more geometric or art nouveau covers. I’d like to get all the Jane Austen titles. I have four so far; I’m missing Northanger Abbey and Persuasion. I’m also eyeing a few of the other titles. If you would like to see the whole collection, you’ll find them here. Chiltern is a UK publisher, but you can buy these in the US, too. I don’t know about the rest of the world. (And no, I’m not an affiliate or anything. I just think they are beautiful, and I’d like to make it easier for you to track them down than it was for me, when I first went looking for them without knowing the publisher!)

    Those Chiltern Editions are beautiful! I need to look into getting a copy of The Secret Garden. That’s one of my favorite books and I can’t resist a beautiful cover. I’m looking forward to reading or listening to The Becoming. I really enjoyed the first book in the trilogy – far more than I expected – and can’t wait to continue the story. I limit my news exposure down to the bare minimum. I want to stay informed but it’s so easy to fall down the rabbit hole with it. I hope you are having a wonderful week.
