August 10, 2025 Sunday Post 14

The Sunday Post is hosted by the wonderful Kimberly, the Caffeinated Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news, recap the past week, take a look ahead, and showcase our new treasures—I mean books!

This week I’m also participating in The Sunday Salon hosted by Deb at Readerbuzz, and Stacking the Shelves hosted by Marlene at Reading Reality.

The Past Week

In real life: I had a bit of a scare last weekend, when occasional flashes of light and a sort of smudge in the vision of my right eye led me to suspect a vitreous detachment or possibly the start of a retinal detachment. Monday morning I went in to the eye doctor for an emergency appointment. The good news: There’s no no sign of retinal detachment, no damage to the retina, and no evidence of macular degeneration (thank God!) The meh news: It was probably a tear in the vitreous body, and the misty smudge is probably a floater, which I will be stuck with for a while, possibly forever. It’s like having a smudge on my glasses; I can see through it, but it’s a bit distracting and annoying, especially when I’m working on the computer.

I also had an existing appointment with my primary care physician that afternoon, and discovered to my dismay that he is retiring as of this week, on account of his health. I’m sad, because both Mr. Bookwyrm and I really like him and will miss seeing him.

I was late turning in an index because I was in doctors’ offices all day Monday, but I got it turned in on Tuesday and they were very understanding.

Yesterday (Saturday) I went to the monthly fiber guild meeting; I won some angelina (sparkly threads to add to my spinning) as a door prize, and we had a lesson in printing on fabric with stamps from nature (flowers, leaves, fruit.) On Friday, I’ll be getting a private lesson in rigid heddle weaving from one of my guild sisters; I’m really excited to learn!

5 Good Things:

  1. I’m so thankful to be able to see!
  2. I found my best drop spindle, which I had misplaced a month and a half ago.
  3. I made two yummy quiches this week.
  4. I bought some gorgeous alpaca yarn from a friend who is closing down her business.
  5. The weather, while heating up again, is not as humid, which is a welcome relief.

Looking Ahead

What I’ve Been Reading/Watching

Reading: I didn’t have much time to read this week, and to be honest, I had a hard time settling to anything. I finished up The Adept and started The Lodge of the Lynx (Katherine Kurtz; rereads.)

Listening to: I finished (and loved) Sweep of the Blade (Graphic Audio edition) by Ilona Andrews, for the Innkeeper read-along. After that, I started The Regency Years: During Which Jane Austen Writes, Napoleon Fights, Byron Makes Love, and Britain Becomes Modern by Robert Morrison; it’s research for the novel I want to get back to writing, which takes place about 10-15 years later.

Watching: Wild Wild East, a nature series about Canada’s eastern seaboard, which we started late last week. (Featured so far: foxes; fish and cormorants; eagles; and seals and migratory shorebirds; bees and monarch butterflies.)

Playing: Wordle, Connections, Strands, Spelling Bee, and Sudoku (all from the NYT.) Wingspan, both online with Robin and solo. Occasionally Clues by Sam.

Sorry you’ve been having issues with your eyesight, Lark. So glad it wasn’t more serious. Bummer about your doctor. Finding a new one can be challenging. Great books this week, especially some that you purchased. Enjoy!

Thank you. I’m very relieved it wasn’t serious. I’m not looking forward to finding a new primary care doctor. I could stay with another doctor in his current practice, but it’s pretty far from where I live; the trip was worth it to stay with a doctor I knew and was comfortable with, but I think I’ll check around for recommendations that are closer to home.

      Have a great week!

Oh my goodness…I’m so glad that your eye doctor was able to figure out what was going on and to tell you that it was not anything major. I am visiting my eye doctor (who is retiring soon—sigh) tomorrow and I imagine I will need cataract surgery.

I need to look into how to play Wingspan online.

    • Lark_Bookwyrm

Oh, I hope your cataract surgery goes well, Deb, and that you can find a new eye doctor that you like.

I know of two ways to play Wingspan online: on Steam (on your computer), or in the mobile app. Each is around $10, I think. I love the game so much, I have it on Steam and on my phone. You can play against other people who have the game, or play solo against between 1 and 4 AI opponents. If you play against other people, you can choose a real-time game (no more than 3 minutes per person per turn), or asynchronously (you make your move, then log out and go do whatever; when you come back, you can see if the other person has taken their turn yet.) I hope you enjoy it!

I’m sorry for your troubles. It’s so hard to find a good doctor so I wish you luck in fining a new one. I love your good things. Alpaca yarn is yummy. I hope you can join us for a chat if you are home this Sunday. Sweep of the Blade was amazing.

Yikes about your eyes! I had a vitreous gel separation in my right eye back in April and it completely freaked me out. Luckily, my retina didn’t tear. But now I have a blobby air-bubble like floater in my eye that is very annoying, especially when I’m trying to read or do stuff on the computer. I’m glad your eye is okay. That’s definitely a good thing! 😀

I think that’s what I have, too. The floaters I have had previously have been more clearly defined, and this one is an amorphous, slightly misty or foggy spot. But I’m so relieved it wasn’t worse.

You got some great looking books! The Jayne Ann Krentz especially looks great. I’m so sorry to hear about your doctor. It’s so hard to find one that you like and work well with. That’s a relief about your eye but so frustrating. I have the genetic markers for macular degeneration and my aunt has it as well so it’s high up on my fear list though my aunt swears its manageable. I hope you’ve had a great week.

    • Lark_Bookwyrm

I didn’t know there were genetic markers for macular degeneration! My grandfather had it, so it’s a worry. My stepgrandmother did too, but since she wasn’t related to me genetically, there’s no heritability there.
