January 18, 2026 Sunday Post 4

The Sunday Post is hosted by the wonderful Kimberly, the Caffeinated Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news, recap the past week, take a look ahead, and showcase our new treasures—I mean books!

This week I’m also participating in The Sunday Salon hosted by Deb at Readerbuzz, and Stacking the Shelves hosted by Marlene at Reading Reality.

The Past Week

In real life: Yesterday was the funeral for J, my dear friend and mentor. Robin flew in for the weekend, and we sang in the choir. It was a beautiful service, and a joy and an honor to sing for my friend one final time. She was Robin’s violin teacher and my choral director for many years. I miss her fiercely.

5 Good Things:

  1. We were in a good financial position to handle not one but two unexpected brake replacements in three days this week—one on each car.
  2. Robin has been helping me downsize. We went through the craft supplies yesterday, except the yarn and spinning fiber. Now we’re going through books…some of the hardest things for me to let go of. Robin’s support has been really helpful on both the emotional and the logistical/practical level.
  3. A number of singers from J’s former choruses (both adult and children/youth choruses; the latter were later my choruses) came for her her funeral. By invitation, some of us sang with the church’s small choir. It was truly a joy and a blessing to sing with these good friends again, and to chat with them afterwards, along with others who came to the funeral but did not sing.
  4. A friend of Robin’s, one of my former chorus kids, came over after the funeral and stayed to dinner. We had a good and wide-ranging conversation, filled with laughter.
  5. I have a wonderful husband, and we raised an amazing child. I’m so blessed to have both of them in my life.

What I’ve Been Reading/Watching

Reading: I finished The Summer of the Great-Grandmother by Madeleine L’Engle. I’m currently reading Best Hex Ever by Nadia El-Fassi, which Robin gave me for my birthday last year. It’s light and delightful, a welcome antidote to the daily deluge of horrifying news stories.

Listening to: I finished The Late Scholar by Jill Paton Walsh (a continuation of Dorothy Sayers’ Lord Peter Wimsey mysteries.)

Watching: Star Trek: The Next Generation (a rewatch); we finished Season 6 and started Season 7, the final season.

Playing: Wingspan (phone app), Winter Burrow (Steam), and Pokémon Go. And my dailies: Wordle, Connections, Strands, Spelling Bee, and Sudoku (all from the NYT.)

For Review or Consideration

Many thanks to Berkley for Magic and Mischief at the Wayside Hotel!

Ten Years Ago I Was Reading…

I saw this idea on Lisa Loves Literature, who got it from Musings of a Bookish Kitty (who I also follow.) I thought I would give it a try! I published these reviews 10 years ago between Jan. 12 and January 18, 2015.

Stay kind, hopeful, and steadfast… and may your books bring you joy this week!

Oh I remember the Lea Waite series! I really enjoyed it. The Magic and Mischief at the Wayside Hotel looks really good. So glad you were able to get the brake situation dealt with and when it rains it definitely pours. I hope you have a wonderful week.
