February 1, 2026 Sunday Post 6

The Sunday Post is hosted by the wonderful Kimberly, the Caffeinated Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news, recap the past week, take a look ahead, and showcase our new treasures—I mean books!

This week I’m also participating in The Sunday Salon hosted by Deb at Readerbuzz, and Stacking the Shelves hosted by Marlene at Reading Reality.

The Past Week

In real life: We weathered the winter storm (pun intended) without losing power. We got about 3 inches of snow, with sleet mixed in and freezing rain on top. It formed a dense and heavy mass that weather reporters have been describing as “snowcrete.” They weren’t kidding in likening it to concrete—in some places, the frozen crust was thick enough to support my weight without my feet breaking through! My husband spent Monday and part of Tuesday digging out our cars (which we had parked at the top of the driveway, close to the street) and then clearing about half of our driveway and helping our neighbor with much of his.

On Wednesday, I braved the roads and went to my annual dermatologist appointment and ran a few errands. The parking lots and access roads aren’t nearly as clear of snow and ice as the main roads are. I slipped and fell next to my car in the Walmart lot, but luckily I wasn’t hurt.

Thursday was quiet. Friday, I went to a friend’s house for tea, and gave her most of my fabric stash. (I kept the fabric I use for making tea cozies, but let go of everything else.) We had a wonderful conversation about books, book collecting, movies, and more. We hadn’t gotten together in years—no falling out, just different stages of life and conflicting schedules—so it felt really good to catch up.

5 Good Things:

  1. On Monday, we put up a birdfeeder and also threw some birdseed on the snow for the groundfeeders. I have seen seven or eight dark-eyed juncos and several sparrows of indeterminate species (probably chipping sparrows.) The juncos in particular have been very happy with the thrown birdseed, and I love seeing them busily hopping around. (So far, no birds seem interested in the hanging birdfeeder, but hopefully they will find it eventually.)
  2. My husband’s side of the family has settled on this summer’s vacation/reunion dates and rental property.
  3. I got a clean bill of health from the dermatologist. I expected that, but it’s always reassuring to get an official all-clear.
  4. I ordered some printable book-planner and -tracker sheets from Etsy to use in my A5 planner, which I’m looking forward to using.
  5. My friend sent me home with a loaf of her bread and 6 fresh eggs from her mom’s chickens.

What I’ve Been Reading/Watching

Reading: I finished rereading Mind Games by Nora Roberts (reviewed in 2025), then reread Hidden Nature, which I have yet to review. I also finished reading Best Hex Ever by Nadia El-Fassi; Robin gave me a copy for my birthday last year, but I ended up borrowing the Kindlebook from the library so I could read it at night. After that, I started Love at First Fright by the same author. But I set that aside last night (temporarily) in favor of the new Hidden Legacy novella from Ilona Andrews, Beast Business.

Listening to: The Queens of Crime, by Marie Benedict. I’m enjoying the story and the characters, although I have the same feeling about this as I do about other Marie Benedict books: there’s almost too much description. I also don’t feel that she really captures Dorothy Sayers’ narrative voice, which is a pity considering the book is written in the first person present.

I need to get back to The Regency Years: During Which Jane Austen Writes, Napoleon Fights, Byron Makes Love, and Britain Becomes Modern by Robert Morrison; it’s for writing research.

Watching: Star Trek: The Next Generation, Season 7 (a rewatch); Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials (on Netflix); The Moving Finger (from the 1990s, starrring Joan Hickson as Miss Marple; also a rewatch); and Starfleet Academy, Season 1.

Playing: Wingspan (phone app), Winter Burrow (Steam), and Pokémon Go. And my dailies: Wordle, Connections, Strands, Spelling Bee, and Sudoku (all from the NYT.)

You’ve had a productive week. The first round we got freezing rain which was also like a rock. I finally had that cleared up and now snow. We got very little and it’s fluffy so I have been sweeping it away. Still enjoying my Minnesota clothes and boots though.

I love juncos! They’re so cute hopping on the ground looking for seed. And I’m glad you didn’t lose power in this last storm; hopefully all that snow and ice will melt soon. (And I’m glad you didn’t get hurt when you fell!)

I really liked Blue Dahlia though it is clear that Nora Roberts had never been to Memphis when she wrote it. The story is still a good one. We just got a birdfeeder that has a camera that connect to your phone and I am incredibly excited about it. Enjoy your reading!
