May 11, 2025 Sunday Post 3

The Sunday Post is hosted by the wonderful Kimberly, the Caffeinated Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news, recap the past week, take a look ahead, and showcase our new treasures—I mean books!

This week I’m also participating in The Sunday Salon hosted by Deb at Readerbuzz, and Stacking the Shelves hosted by Marlene at Reading Reality.

Happy Mother’s Day! If you are a mother, I hope you are having a lovely day! If you have lost your mother or your child, or if your relationship with them is difficult, I wish you comfort and peace.

The Past Week

In real life: Monday, we had several severe thunderstorms in a row: torrential rain, thunder and lightning, and even hail. The lights flickered several times, but thankfully the power stayed on. (It helps that we appear to be on the same line that sends power to the firehouse and rescue squad.) It stayed cool(ish) most of the week, which was nice. I got in several miles on the treadmill and one walk outdoors.

Saturday was the monthly fiber guild meeting. We have some exciting things coming up, including Worldwide Knit in Public Day on June 14, a knit-along (KAL), the Tour de Fleece spinning event, and a pillow exchange (for next year.) After the meeting, I got my second shingles shot, and to be honest, I’m feeling pretty miserable today: tired, achy, and headachy. (Hence why I am late posting this.)

Mr. Bookwyrm and I head out West at the end of the week to celebrate my mom and stepdad’s wedding anniversary. He’ll be back Monday; I’ll stay for several weeks to spend time with Robin, my parents, and my sister. Then we will rendezvous in Texas for our nephew’s wedding and a family reunion/vacation (Mr. Bookwyrm’s side of the family.) I will be pretty busy this week, between work and getting ready for a month away, so I don’t expect to get much blogging done.

5 Good Things:

  1. Mr. Bookwyrm brought me a beautiful bouquet of roses and lilies—an early Mother’s Day gift.
  2. I had a lovely walk on an overcast day, listening to the birds. I only saw robins and a cardinal, but according to Merlin Bird ID, I heard an ovenbird, a Carolina wren, a woodpecker, tufted titmice, wood thrushes, and an Acadian flycatcher. (I wish I could have spotted some of those, but my hat, my eyesight, and abundant foliage made that difficult.)
  3. One of my favorite board games, Flamecraft, is coming to Steam, and I’m so excited! It’s being adapted by Monster Couch, the same group that did such a terrific job adapting Wingspan. (Now, if they would just do Wyrmspan!)
  4. I’m looking forward to all the events and activities my fiber guild has in store.
  5. Mr. Bookwyrm brought me brunch in bed this morning. And I got to wish both my mothers (mother and stepmother) a Happy Mother’s Day this afternoon, over the phone.

What I’ve Been Reading/Watching

Reading: I read It Takes a Psychic (Jayne Castle/Krentz; ARC), the sequel to People in Glass Houses. Then went back and reread People in Glass Houses (overdue ARC.) After that, I reread Jewels of the Sun (Nora Roberts), but I probably won’t reread the other two books in the trilogy right now.

Listening to: I finished Clean Sweep (Graphic Audio edition) by Ilona Andrews for the Innkeeper readalong, as well as the sequel, Sweep in Peace (both borrowed from Hoopla.) I’m a little dubious about the “graphic” part of these full-cast audios (there’s too much panting, moaning, and grunting associated with pain or effort, for one thing) but I do enjoy the casting. After that, I decided I’d better save the rest of the Innkeeper novellas for their proper months in the readalong, so I turned to The Left-handed Booksellers of London, which I have read but neither listened to nor reviewed before.

I’m also still thoughtfully making my way through Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teachings of Plants by Robin Wall Kimmerer.

Watching: Star Trek: The Next Generation, Season 4, and Stephen Colbert.

Playing: Wordle, Connections, Strands, Spelling Bee, and Sudoku (all from the NYT), plus digital Wingspan.

When we walk in the woods, I always hear more birds than I am able to see. It helps me a lot when I walk with a good birder who can point out birds. I rarely see wrens or titmouse except in my own backyard—I guess they are shy in the wild.

You are in for a bit of traveling soon. Enjoy!
