October 26, 2025 Sunday Post 4

The Sunday Post is hosted by the wonderful Kimberly, the Caffeinated Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news, recap the past week, take a look ahead, and showcase our new treasures—I mean books!

This week I’m also participating in The Sunday Salon hosted by Deb at Readerbuzz, and Stacking the Shelves hosted by Marlene at Reading Reality.

The Past Week

In real life: Robin has been here all week, and it has been wonderful! Last Sunday, Mr. Bookwyrm and I went on a lunch date while Robin got together with a friend. On Monday, Robin and I visited Robin’s violin teacher and my former director, mentor, and dear friend, who is in hospice. It was a bittersweet visit, but I’m so glad Robin and I were both able to see her. Tuesday, we had some friends over for tea, a mother and daughter who are close to our own ages. Friday, we went for a 3.25-mile walk in the woods at the local state park; it was beautiful, but I’m out of shape and was very tired by the time we got back to the parking lot. (I need to get back to walking!) We had another friend over for tea on Saturday, someone who sang in my children’s and youth choirs alongside Robin, but a few years younger. In between all the visiting, we mostly hung out at home: we did a couple of jigsaw puzzles, knitted, watched a few movies, and played some games. I did some spinning, too.

Tomorrow we get up before dawn to drive Robin to the airport. But we’ll see them again in December if all goes well. (Our plans may have to change due to the government shutdown… but hopefully not.)

5 Good Things:

  1. It has been so lovely to have Robin here!
  2. We celebrated my birthday.
  3. Both our teas were delicious: fresh scones (proper British ones, not the dry triangular American ones), fresh strawberries, homemade whipped cream, and chicken salad made with cranberries, apples, & pecans.
  4. I finally got the handknitted baby blanket and hat sent off to our niece for her baby (born in early September.)
  5. I was approved for two ARCs I really want to read.

What I’ve Been Reading/Watching

Reading: Again, I barely read at all this week; I had other things going on. I finished Exile’s Song by Marion Zimmer Bradley and Adrienne Martine-Barnes (uncredited), and started the sequel, The Shadow Matrix. I also started The Late-Night Witches by Auralee Wallace (an ARC.)

Listening to: I finished The Spare Man, by Mary Robinette Kowal (read by the author.) After that, I started A Death in Diamonds by SJ Bennett. Both are/were rereads for me, but the first time in audio.

Watching: Miss Marple: “The 4:50 from Paddington” and “Sleeping Murder.” The Miss Marple adaptions starring Joan Hickson are comfort movies for both me and Robin. We also watched Free Guy, which was light and fun. I’m sure I missed some of the jokes and references that hardcore videogamers would have gotten, but I knew enough to get the more obvious ones.

Playing: Wingspan on my phone, both solo and with Robin. And my usuals: Wordle, Connections, Strands, Spelling Bee, and Sudoku (all from the NYT), and Pokémon Go. We also did several jigsaw puzzles.

The tea sounds lovely as does the visit with Robin. Happy birthday to you! I really enjoyed A Death in Diamonds. I’m looking forward to reading the rest of the series. I hope you have a great week!

Robin made the scones—they are an excellent cook and baker! We have two “family” recipes: one given to us 40 years ago by an English friend of my parents, which works fine here in Virginia but not at high altitude in New Mexico, and another that Robin found online that works at high altitude. They tried that one for our first tea; it was tasty but didn’t rise enough here at low altitude, so they switched back to the English recipe for the second batch.
