The Past Week

In real life: I hope you had a wonderful 4th of July, if you celebrated it. The heat here was brutal, so we didn’t attend any of the celebrations of the 250th anniversary of the United States of America. I’m kind of sad about that. I would have avoided the so-called Great American State Fair and Freedom 250 events in DC anyway, but it would have been nice to attend some of the local (and nonpartisan) events in our nearby, very historic town.

It’s been an eventful week: more work on the house, a medical test/procedure for me, and emergency laser eye surgery for my brother in law. We signed our wills and power of attorney documents, and ordered new appliances for the kitchen. We dropped off three more boxes of books at the used bookstore and library; that’s probably the last of them for a bit. And my friends and I kicked off Tour de Fleece yesterday with a hybrid in-studio and Zoom event.

6 Good Things:

  1. I came through the procedure well, and Mr. Bookwyrm took good care of me.
  2. We had an impromptu ice cream date at an ice cream shop downtown, while waiting for the used bookstore to evaluate my books. It was 100°F outside, so both the ice cream and the air conditioning were very welcome. And the molasses gingersnap ice cream was delicious!
  3. We had the contractor pull out the side bed that was full of zoysia grass and weeds (including poison ivy) and put easy-care rose bushes in its place, with landscape fabric and mulch to keep down the weeds. It looks much better, and coordinates well with the rest of the landscaping. (Now if only the plants can survive the heat…)
  4. Our new dishwasher and refrigerator will be delivered today.
  5. I’m spinning again!

What I’ve Been Reading/Watching

Reading: I read two light, cozy fantasy romance ARCs: Twig’s Traveling Tomes by Gryffin Murphy, which I loved, and Unexpected Magic by Jude Knight, which was OK but fun. Then, for a change of pace and genre, I started Remember That Day (Mary Balogh), which came out in January and finally went on sale last month.

Listening to: I finished book #4 in Jayne Ann Krentz’s Arcane Society series, The Third Circle, and went on to book #6, The Perfect Poison.

Watching: Star Trek: The Next Generation, Season 7 (a rewatch), A Capitol Fourth: 250th Weekend Celebration (July 3 on PBS), and National Treasure (first half).

Playing: Pokémon GO, Wingspan (phone app), and my usuals: Wordle, Connections, Strands, Spelling Bee, the Mini and Midi Crossword, and/or Sudoku, depending on the day. (I don’t usually have time for all of them!)

Kindle: Lots of books went on sale this week! I’ve read about a third of these, but want to own a copy. The others are books that have been on my TBR list or at least my radar.     Sounds like a good enough week even with the medical stuff! It was so hot here last week I was kind of dreading the 4th, but then with the rain that passed through we cooled off and had a really nice evening to sit outside and watch my brother shoot off fireworks. I have a bunch of books to take to Half Price Books and see if I can get anything for them, but with all the World Cup stuff going on in town, I’ve avoided that part of town for now. It’s fun to look back at what we were reading 10 years ago! Lots of good books here, I used to love to read Amanda Quick too. Have a great week!
